Farmingdale State - 6, Calvin - 5 (F/2OT)
Davenport, Fla. - With 1:46 remaining in double overtime, Farmingdale State freshman attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal off AJ Sandorfi's pass (Lynbrook, N.Y.) to lead the Rams to a 6-5 non-conference victory over Calvin College on Wednesday.
After the Knights (5-3) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage early in the second, FSC (5-3) junior midfielder James Ragland (Seaford, N.Y.) converted a man-up opportunity to even the score with 8:14 on the clock. Calvin junior attack Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich.) tallied the final two goals of the half as the Knights went into the break on top, 3-1.
Ragland opened the third quarter with back-to-back scores to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:39 left to play. FSC's Peter Engelken (Holtsville, N.Y.) followed with a goal off the feed from senior attack Shane Clark (Oceanside, N.Y.) to give the Rams their first lead at 4-3. With only 24 seconds remaining in the third, a Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill.) score evened the game at 4-4.
Senior attack Sean Gannon (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal with 10:47 left in the fourth to put the Rams back on top, 5-4. Calvin used a Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind.) man-up score with 41 seconds remaining tie the game at 5-5 and force overtime.
After a first overtime where Farmingdale State held a narrow 2-1 shot advantage, Wandle sent home the game-winner with 1:46 left in the second OT to seal the victory.
Ragland led all scorers with three goals, while Clark notched a team-high two assists and picked up three ground balls. Sandorfi had one assist to go alone with a game-high six ground balls and junior attack Jake Satterley (West Babylon, N.Y.) recorded one assist and picked up four ground balls.
For the Knights, Sparling totaled a game-high four points on two goals and two assists.
Farmingdale State senior goalkeeper Dan Wood (East Meadow, N.Y.) stopped 11 shots in the win, while sophomore Gerrit Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich.) had 24 saves for Calvin.
FSC next will host Keystone in a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 27th at 4:00 p.m.
