James is a 2015 graduate of Seaford High School, where he earned All-Conference honors. James transferred to Farmingdale State after playing lacrosse at Dowling College. He is the son of John and Kathy Ragland.

Senior year...Named Second Team All-Conference...Played in 16-of-17 games...Led the team with 37 goals, two game-winning scores and seven man-up goals...Also ranked second in points (48) and shots (111) and fifth for assists (11)...Finished eighth in the Skyline for goals, ninth in points and 10th for shots...In the NCAA, he finished 82nd in man-up scores.

Junior year...Named First Team All-Conference...Appeared in 17-of-18 games...Led the team in man-up goals (7), ranked second in goals (31), shots (117) and game-winning goals (2) and third in points (37)...In the Skyline, ranked seventh for shots per game (6.88)...Finished 83rd in the NCAA for man-up goals.
