Rams Fall to SUNY Cortland in Non-Conference Home Game

SUNY Cortland - 16, Farmingdale State - 7


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team hosted SUNY Cortland for a non-conference matchup this evening and fell, 16-7. The Rams dropped to 3-3 on the year, while the Red Dragons improved to 3-2.

After Cortland jumped out to a 4-0 lead, FSC senior midfielder James Ragland (Seaford, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Rams with 6:25 left in the first as he notched a man-up goal off the feed by freshman midfielder Peter Engelken (Holtsville, N.Y.). The Red Dragons closed the quarter with unassisted scores by senior attack Joey Panariello (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Brandon Stiles (Mastic, N.Y.) to extend the advantage to 6-1. Cortland was a perfect 8-for-8 on faceoffs in the first quarter.

Trailing 7-2 with 8:36 remaining in the second quarter, an unassisted goal by Farmingdale State freshman attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) pulled the Rams within four. The Red Dragons scored the final five goals and took a 12-3 lead into the break. Cortland won 16-of-17 faceoffs in the first half.

In the third quarter, Panariello and Stiles scored the only goals as the Red Dragons extended their advantage to 14-3.

Farmingdale State outscored Cortland 4-2 in the fourth as Wandle, junior attacks AJ Sandorfi (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Jake Satterley (West Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Jack Livingston (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each tallied goals for the Rams.

For FSC, Satterley and Wandle each scored a team-high two goals.

Cortland was led by Panariello who recorded a game-high six points on five goals and one assist, while senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) had four goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Brian Williams (Holtsville, N.Y.) finished the night 20-of-23 on faceoffs and also picked up a game-high 18 ground balls in the victory.

Farmingdale State senior goalkeeper Dan Wood (East Meadow, N.Y.) stopped 17 shots, while junior Jon Vargas (West Islip, N.Y.) had six saves for Cortland.

The FSC men's lacrosse team returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 16th when they host non-conference opponent Alfred State at 2:30 p.m.
