First Quarter Propels #1 Maritime Over FSC in Skyline Final

#1 Maritime - 22, #3 Farmingdale State - 13


Throggs Neck, N.Y. - Top-seeded Maritime College defeated #3 Farmingdale State, 22-13, in the Skyline Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Final on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers used a nine-goal first quarter en route to their third consecutive Skyline title.

FSC (12-4) senior attack Rob Varello (Smithtown, N.Y.) recorded the game's first two goals, before a 9-0 run by Maritime.

Trailing 2-0 with 9:07 on the clock, three different goal-scorers put the Privateers in front, 3-2.

Freshman attack Parker Reilly (West Islip, N.Y.) followed with three straight goals in a span of 2:16 to put MT ahead by four.

Junior attack John Killcommons (Garden City, N.Y.) followed with a pair of goals before assisting teammate Steven Pinto (Oakdale, N.Y.) for one as they went up, 9-2.

In the opening minute of the second quarter, Farmingdale State senior midfielder Johnny McMahon (Albertson, N.Y.) tallied a goal to cut the deficit to six.

After a score by Maritime, senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back goals as the Rams closed within five at 10-5.

With 1:38 to play in the half, Privateers' sophomore attack Sean Foley (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Killcommons scored goals to increase their advantage to 12-5.

Farmingdale State was down by eight, 14-6, midway through the third quarter before McMahon and senior attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) netted goals to close within 14-8.

MT closed the quarter with four unanswered scores to take a commanding 18-8 lead.

The Privateers extended their lead to 20-8 with two early scores in the fourth quarter.

Farmingdale State added goals from Varello (2), sophomore attack Thomas Stock (Selden, N.Y.) (2) and freshman midfielder Steven DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) in the final 6:27 but fell, 22-13.

Varello recorded a team-high four goals, while McMahon tallied two goals, two assists, four ground balls and one caused turnover. Wandle notched a goal and three assists for four points and Stock finished with three goals. Haggerty registered two goals and an assist for FSC.

Junior goalkeeper Kevin Loonie (Lynbrook, N.Y.) stopped 18 shots in defeat.

Killcommons (6g, 1a) and Reilly (4g, 3a) had seven points apiece for the Privateers.

Maritime has earned the Conference's automatic bid into the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
