Varello Scores Six Goals in Win Over Alvernia

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State freshman attack Rob Varello (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored a game-high six goals as the men's lacrosse team earned a 22-3 non-conference victory over Alvernia this afternoon. The Rams improved to 6-1 on the year, while the Golden Wolves dropped to 1-7.

Trailing 1-0 in the opening minutes, FSC senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1. After an unassisted goal by Varello put the Rams up 2-1, sophomore midfielder Johnny McMahon (Albertson, N.Y.) and Haggerty followed with scores to increase the lead to three with 6:24 remaining.

Over the final 4:09 of the first quarter, senior midfielder John McMahon (West Babylon, N.Y.), sophomore attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Varello all recorded goals to put Farmingdale State on top, 7-1.

Leading 9-2 with 6:45 left to play in the second, Haggerty notched his third goal of the day off the pass from Wandle to increase the advantage to eight. The Rams outscored the Golden Wolves 5-0 the remainder of the quarter and took a 15-2 lead into halftime.

Johnny McMahon opened the third with an unassisted goal and Varello followed with back-to-back scores to put FSC up 18-2 with 10:14 on the clock. Haggerty, freshman midfielder Hunter Lyons (East Islip, N.Y.) and freshman attack Joe Colao (Middle Island, N.Y.) each added a goal to close out the third quarter.

Each team scored once in the fourth as Farmingdale State went on for the 22-3 victory.

To go along with his six goals, Varello had four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Haggerty notched a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists. Wandle totaled seven points with three goals and four assists and Johnny McMahon added three goals and two assists. Freshman defenders Gino Luchetti (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Nicholas Gillespie (Carle Place, N.Y.) caused four and three turnovers, respectively. Freshman Antonio Kaminskey (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with a game-high 10 ground balls in the win for FSC.

The Rams next will open their Skyline Conference schedule with a road game at Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, April 2nd at 1:00 p.m.
