Farmingdale State - 13, New Paltz - 9
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team hosted SUNY New Paltz for a non-conference game this afternoon and won 13-9 after outscoring the Hawks, 4-0, in the final quarter. Freshman midfielder Hunter Lyons (East Islip, N.Y.) netted four goals and had one assist to lead FSC to the win.
Tied 1-1, Farmingdale State (5-1) used a Lyons score to go in front, 2-1, just six minutes in.
With 4:47 left in the first quarter, FSC freshman attack Rob Varello (Smithtown, N.Y.) set up freshman midfielder Steven DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) for a goal to go ahead by two.
Only 1:19 later, sophomore midfielder Johnny McMahon (Albertson, N.Y.) scored his 10th goal of the season as Farmingdale State took a 4-1 advantage into the second.
FSC scored three goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter to go up, 7-1. Sophomore attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) netted the pass from freshman attack Thomas Stock (Selden, N.Y.), before senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) set up both Varello and Lyons for goals.
Over the final 9:23 of the second quarter, New Paltz (0-5) outscored the Rams, 5-1, using five different goal-scorers, to cut their deficit to just two at 8-6.
On the opening faceoff of the second half, Hawks' sophomore midfielder Matt Brignati (East Northport, N.Y.) earned the win, picked up the ground ball and passed it to junior attack Thomas Armetta (West Islip, N.Y.), who scored to make it a one-goal game.
After Lyons set up Stock for his first goal of the game, New Paltz sophomore attack John Reese (Nesconset, N.Y.) registered back-to-back scores to tie the game up at 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
With 10:50 left to play, Johnny McMahon scored the eventual game-winner, unassisted to put FSC on top, 10-9.
The Rams held the 10-9 advantage until 5:38 remaining when Lyons scored to give Farmingdale State a two-goal lead.
FSC added late goals by senior midfielder John McMahon (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Haggerty as they went on for the 13-9 victory. Rams' freshman goalkeeper Kevin Loonie (Lynbrook, N.Y.) (W, 5-1) stopped all four New Paltz shots on goal in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 saves in the win.
Lyons matched his career-best with four goals, to go along with an assist and a ground ball. Haggerty registered two goals and two assists for four points, while Johnny McMahon had two goals, a caused turnover and two ground balls. Stock and Varello notched a goal and an assist each.
Freshman Gino Luchetti (Farmingville, N.Y.) anchored the FSC defense as he tallied a career-best six caused turnovers and seven ground balls. His six CT's sits tied for fifth all-time in a single game in program history. Freshman defender Christian Lembo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) finished with a caused turnover and career-high four ground balls, while freshman defender Jack Conklin added two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
New Paltz was led by Reese, who had three goals, one assist, two ground balls and a caused turnover, and Brignati, who went 17-for-23 on faceoffs.
The Rams next will play host to Alvernia in a non-conference game on Saturday, March 26th at 1:00 p.m.
