Manhattanville - 13, Farmingdale State - 9
Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team traveled to non-conference opponent Manhattanville College yesterday evening and fell, 13-9. The Rams dropped to 1-1, while the Valiants won in their season opener and are 1-0.
FSC opened the scoring with 10:02 remaining in the first quarter as senior attack Shane Clark (Oceanside, N.Y.) netted an unassisted goal. Manhattanville would respond with two goals from junior attack Gianni Ciffone (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) both off the feed from Will Duval (Granite Bay, Calif.) to take a 2-1 advantage. The Rams tied the game at 2-2 with just 1:24 left in the quarter as junior attack AJ Sandorfi (Lynbrook, N.Y.) set up Clark for his second score.
After each team registered a goal apiece in the second quarter, the Valiants opened the scoring in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Sandorfi knotted the game at 4-4 with an unassisted goal just 1:48 later but the Valiants quickly answered with back-to-back goals to go up, 6-4. Trailing 7-5 with 8:09 left in the quarter, Farmingdale State junior attack Jake Satterley (West Babylon, N.Y.) would set up sophomore midfielder Richard Russo (Wantagh, N.Y.) for a goal to cut the deficit to one. Over the final three minutes of the third, Manhattanville scored twice as they took a 9-6 advantage into the fourth.
Just 34 seconds into the final quarter, Rams freshman attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal to close within two, 9-7. Still leading by two, 10-8, with 10 minutes left, the Valiants used another Ciffone goal to go in front, 11-8. Just 1:18 later, FSC would cut the deficit to 11-9 with a Sandorfi goal but were unable to score the rest of the way as Manhattanville went on for the 13-9 victory.
Sandorfi produced a team-high four points on three goals and one assist. Clark finished with three goals and a game-high five ground balls, while freshman midfielder Peter Engelken (Holtsville, N.Y.), Russo and Wandle had one goal apiece. Junior midfielder John McMahon (West Babylon, N.Y.) was 20-for-26 on faceoffs and was just two wins shy of tying the school record.
Ciffone led the way for Manhattanville with six goals, one assist and three ground balls. Duval recorded two goals and two assists for four points and junior midfielder T.J. Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif.) tallied two goals and one assist. Valiants' junior goalkeeper Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) posted 20 saves in the win.
Farmingdale State next travels to Neumann for a non-conference game on Saturday, March 2nd at 1:00 p.m.
