Rams Fall in Home Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team fell 16-6 in the home opener against Plattsburgh State this afternoon. The Rams now stand at 0-2 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 2-0.

Plattsburgh opened the scoring with a goal from Ryan Hastings at 11:22 in the first, before adding an unassisted goal from James Read for the quick 2-0 lead. Farmingdale got on the board at 7:42 as sophomore attack Matthew Finn (Huntington Station, N.Y.) sent home a pass from senior midfielder Josh LaMantia (Setauket, N.Y.) to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals scored two more for a 4-1 advantage, but the Rams answered with two of their own before the end of the first (4-3 Plattsburgh).

In the second period, Finn scored just 1:09 in, tying the game at 4-4. Brendan Damm gave the Cardinals back the lead a minute later for a 5-4 game, before his team added two more to make it 7-4. Rams sophomore midfielder Nicholas Mattei (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored with 1:58 left to play in the second, 7-5 Plattsburgh. Damm added another before the half, giving Plattsburgh an 8-5 lead at the break.

The Cardinals added three more in the third, holding Farmingdale State scoreless for an 11-5 advantage after three periods. Senior midfielder Bobby Thomas (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored in the fourth period for the Rams, making it 11-6, but Plattsburgh would score the rest of the way and take the 16-6 non-conference victory.

For Farmingdale State, Finn finished with three goals. Sophomore midfielder Donovan Devaney (East Northport, N.Y.) won 12-of-18 faceoffs and scored one goal, while senior defender Ricky Morales (Holbrook, N.Y.) had five ground balls on defense. Freshman goalkeeper Thomas Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) made 14 saves in defeat.

Plattsburgh had three hat tricks for the day. Tim Lawrence with three goals and four assists, Damm with three goals and one assist and Joey Kramer with three goals. Gordie Gehring got the win in net with eight saves on 14 shots.

The Rams will now travel to face Hartwick on Saturday, March 9th in a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m.
