Strong Defense Leads Rams Past Maritime

Farmingdale State - 69, Maritime - 57


FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State defense tallied a season-best 10 blocked shots and held Maritime to 22-for-71 shooting (30.9%) from the field in Tuesday night's 69-57 home victory. The men's basketball team improved to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play with the win.

With the score knotted at 10-10 just under eight minutes in, Maritime (8-8, 4-3 Skyline) registered 10 consecutive points, including 3's from Evan Block and Jovan Germain, to take a 20-10 advantage.

Farmingdale State responded in a big way as they tallied the game's next 22 points to jump in front by 12, 32-20. Aaron Davis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) started the run with a driving layup before five straight points by freshman guard Michael Notias (Manhasset, N.Y.) made it a three-point game. After a layup by senior forward Tre Riggins (Baldwin, N.Y.), another Notias layup put the Rams in front, 21-20. 

Senior forward Nick Hurowitz (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) registered nine of the next 11 points to give FSC the 32-20 lead.

The Rams took a 36-23 advantage into the halftime break and opened the second half with a Macai John (Hauppauge, N.Y.) jumper to extend their advantage to 15.

Over the next 5:30, Maritime went on a 14-4 run to cut their deficit to 42-37 with 13:46 on the clock. 

FSC answered with five straight points, including four from senior guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.), to regain a 10-point lead, 47-37.

The Privateers were still down by 10, 65-55, with 2:29 to play and used a jumper to close within eight.

Farmingdale State went 4-for-4 at the foul line down the stretch to clinch the 69-57 Skyline Conference victory.

Hurowitz led the way with 19 points, to go along with seven boards, three assists and three steals. John recorded 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, while Powell registered 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and a block. Riggins produced nine points, five rebounds and four blocks and Notias had seven points and four rebounds off the bench. Junior guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) added four points, four assists and eight rebounds in the win.

The Rams 10 blocked shots in the game ranks tied for sixth on the all-time list.

The men's basketball team will next host Manhattanville in a Skyline game on Saturday, January 21st at noon.
