Trinity (Conn.) - 68, Farmingdale State - 65
HARTFORD, CONN. | The Farmingdale State men's basketball team squared off with host-school Trinity College on Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Trinity Holiday Invitational and fell, 68-65.
With the score tied at 34-34 with two minutes left to play in the first half, senior forward Nick Hurowitz (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) hit a jumper before a pair of free-throws by freshman guard Macai John (Hauppauge, N.Y.) put the Rams (8-4) in front by four heading into halftime.
Farmingdale State extended their lead to six as they opened the second half with a Tre Riggins (Baldwin, N.Y.) layup, off the feed from senior guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.).
With 15:31 on the clock, FSC took their largest lead of the game after junior guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) set up Hurowitz for a 3-pointer to go in front by seven, 47-40.
The Bantams (11-1) answered with a pair of layups and four made free-throws in an 8-0 run to jump ahead, 48-47.
After trading baskets, the Rams still trailed by one, 62-61, with four minutes remaining before Riggins pulled down an offensive rebound, was fouled and hit both free-throws to put FSC on top by one.
The game remained 63-62 until 1:30 on the clock when Will Dorion knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Bantams ahead, 65-63.
Trinity would force a turnover on FSC's next possession and hit another 3-pointer to take a 68-63 advantage with 49 seconds to play.
Zamere McKenzie (Beacon, N.Y.) converted two free-throws with 41 seconds remaining to close within three before the Rams made a defensive stop on the other end.
Powell pulled down the rebound with 10 seconds on the clock, but Trinity swarmed the ball and blocked the Rams final 3-point attempt to clinch the 68-65 victory.
Hurowitz, who was named to the All-Tournament team, shot 10-for-15 from the field for a game-high 24 points, to go along with nine rebounds and two steals. Powell recorded eight points, three rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while McKenzie had eight points off the bench.
The Bantams Henry Vetter hit four 3's and had 18 points in the win.
The men's basketball team next returns to Skyline Conference action when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Wednesday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m.
