BROOKLYN | The Farmingdale State College men's basketball team fell in its season opener Tuesday night on the road, with host New York University capturing a 102-75 decision.

The Rams (0-1) had four players score in double figures on the night, with senior guard Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) leading the way with 14 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Senior guard Zamere McKenzie (Beacon, N.Y.) came off the bench to register 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting, including a 3-for-6 effort beyond the 3-point arc, while junior point guard Jevon Santos (Elmont, N.Y.) collected 13 points and a game-best three steals, while tying McKenzie and senior forward Nick Hurowitz (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.; 10 pts., 5-for-10 FG) for the team-high with four rebounds apiece.

NYU (1-0) was buoyed by a 19-for-39 (.487) effort on the night from long range, and jumped out to a 16-6 lead more than four minutes in before a put-back layup by FSC junior forward Jovayne Walters (Cambria Hts., N.Y.) stopped the run with 14:15 left in the half. The Violets pushed back in front by 16, before a strong 15-4 run by the Rams brought the visitors back to within a 30-25 margin on a trifecta by senior guard Aaron Davis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) -- who had a pair of triples and one assist during the spurt. The hosts scored nine-straight points over the final 2:23, taking a 54-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.

McKenzie's driving layup 1:51 into the second stanza pulled FSC to within 10 points at 57-47, before six straight NYU points sparked a 22-6 run to give the host team a 79-53 lead with 11:30 remaining.

Head coach Brendan Twomey's Rams will play host to Ramapo College of New Jersey in Farmingdale State's home opener on Saturday (Nov. 12), with opening tip-off scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The FSC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is playing host to a food drive for Island Harvest, and strongly encourages fans to bring donations to the contest (full release/list of items sought).
