FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Led by a .458 hitting percentage (12-1-24) and a match-best 15 points by senior outside hitter Kate Flamio (E. Islip, N.Y.), as well as 16 service aces as a team, the Farmingdale State College volleyball squad won its ninth straight match on Monday night at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center, picking up a straight-sets victory (25-7, 25-9, 25-19) over visiting SUNY Old Westbury in Skyline Conference competition.
The host Rams (10-7, 7-1 Skyline) recorded double-digit service aces for the ninth time this season, including a career-high-tying five by senior Cathleen Farrell (Bayport, N.Y.), who also collected the mark Oct. 3 at Mount Saint Vincent. Senior setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) added four aces in the victory over the Panthers (5-8, 3-4), while setting 13 assists in FSC's 6-2 offense to help the team hit at a .266 percentage on the night. Sophomore middle Mikayla Profeta (Knoxville, Tenn.) added eight points for the victors on three kills (3-1-5 hitting line), as many service aces and three total blocks (one solo), while freshman setter Danielle Marullo (Patchogue, N.Y.) chipped into the offense with 12 assists.
Cavalieri and Farrell had service runs of seven and six points in the first set, respectively, before reversing those total in the second frame to put the Rams in front by a 2-0 score. Four straight points, including kills by Flamio and sophomore Jenya Surlin (E. Meadow, N.Y.), pushed FSC in front for good in the third stanza by an 11-8 count. Five straight points were served by Profeta, including two aces, to push the edge to 22-15, before Flamio and Surlin set the block on match point for the triumph.
Head coach Kellie Block's Rams are back in Skyline play Wednesday night, when they travel to Bronxville, N.Y., for a match at Sarah Lawrence College. First serve from the Campbell Sports Center is slated for 7 p.m.
