FSC Comes-from-Behind to Defeat St. Joe's-LI in Five Sets

Farmingdale State - 3, St. Joseph's-Long Island - 2 (24-26, 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 15-12)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team was down, 2-0, and won three straight sets to earn a come-from-behind, 3-2, victory over Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island this evening. With the win, the Rams improved to 10-9 overall and 6-1 in Skyline play.

With the first set tied at 3-3, the Golden Eagles (5-10, 3-3 Skyline) used a 15-5 run to jump out to an 18-8 advantage. The Rams battled back to tie the set at 24-24, but SJC-LI won after an FSC service error and an Amanda Goldstein (Lake Grove, N.Y.) ace.

In set two, St. Joe's was ahead by one and scored six straight points to go in front, 19-12. The Golden Eagles would go on for a 25-22 set two victory.

After falling behind, 8-4, in the third set, Farmingdale State went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 advantage. St. Joe's-Long Island would knot the score at 13-13 before the Rams closed the set on a 12-3 run to win their first set of the match.

FSC cruised in the third set, taking a 22-4 lead, and eventually winning, 25-11. Rams' junior outside Rachel McCartin (Wantagh, N.Y.) served for 10 straight points in the set.

In the deciding fifth set, SJC-LI took an early 4-1 lead, but Farmingdale State recorded six unanswered points, including two service aces by junior outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.), to go ahead, 7-4.

The Rams led by one, 12-11, and used a kill from freshman middle blocker Mikayla Profeta (West Islip, N.Y.) to take a 13-11 advantage. After each team had an attacking error, Farmingdale State freshman middle blocker Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) recorded a kill to clinch the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.

Profeta led the way for FSC with a match-high 16 kills, .273 attacking percentage and five blocks. Ricketts had 10 kills and two blocks, while freshman outside Cathleen Farrell (Bayport, N.Y.) totaled eight kills, seven digs, three aces, two assists and two blocks. Sophomore setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) produced a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs and freshman setter Molly Miller (East Northport, N.Y.) added 16 assists and five kills on a .625 attacking percentage. Flamio tallied seven kills, four aces and 11 digs and junior libero Madisyn Pozo (Bayside, N.Y.) anchored the Rams defense with 19 digs.

The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team next plays Old Westbury (@ Farmingdale State) on Monday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m.
