Rams Outlast Baruch in Five-Set Match

Farmingdale State - 3, Baruch - 2 (25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team played host to Baruch in a non-conference match this evening and earned a 3-2 victory in five sets.

The Rams (3-5) captured the opening set 25-14 before Baruch (1-7) answered with a 25-21 win in the second.

Trailing 16-11 in the third, FSC recorded nine straight points, including eight while junior outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) was serving, to take a 20-16 advantage. The Bearcats quickly tied the match at 20-20 before a Cathleen Farrell (Bayport, N.Y.) kill put the Rams back up by one. After a Rams' service error evened the score at 21-21, FSC tallied four of the final five points to earn a 25-22 victory.

Farmingdale State held a 22-19 lead in the fourth set but Baruch used a kill by Amina Muminovic (Astoria, N.Y.) and four straight Rams' attacking errors to go up by three. The Bearcats went on for the 25-22 win in the fourth set.

In the fifth and final set, FSC jumped out to a 14-7 lead. Baruch responded with six unanswered points, including two service aces from junior libero Sofia Tam (Brightwaters, N.Y.), to cut the deficit to only one. The Rams claimed the next point to win the match on a Bearcats' attacking error.

Farrell recorded a match-high 13 kills and added 17 digs, while Flamio had 10 kills and 13 digs. Freshman middle blocker Kalena Ricketts (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) tallied 10 kills, four blocks and three aces, while freshman outside Madeline Stanley (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) notched a game-high 22 digs. Sophomore setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and freshman setter Molly Miller (East Northport, N.Y.) had 18 and 16 assists, respectively.

For Baruch, freshman outside Sarah Chung (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the way with 13 kills and 18 digs. Five players recorded double-digit digs in the loss for the Bearcats. 

Kellie Block recorded the win in her first game as Head Coach of the Rams.

Farmingdale State next will travel to Montclair State for a tri-match on Saturday, September 18th. FSC will square off against Montclair State at 1:00 p.m. and New Paltz at 3:00 p.m.
