FSC Defeats Rhode Island on First Day of Wheaton Invitational

Norton, Mass. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team competed in the first day of the Wheaton College Invitational on Friday evening and fell to Middlebury, 3-0, before sweeping Rhode Island, 3-0, to pick up their first win of the season.

The Rams (1-4) dropped straight sets, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-10, to the Panthers, who improved to 3-0 on the season.

Middlebury outside hitters Maggie Wise (Winchester, Va.) and Jane Nelson (Hopkins, Minn.) registered 11 kills apiece and posted hitting percentages of .667 and .611, respectively, to lead the Panthers to the victory.

In the second match versus Rhode Island (1-2), FSC jumped out to a 19-9 advantage in the first set. The Anchorwomen responded with 13-3 run to knot the score at 22-22. Farmingdale State was able to capture three of the next four points to earn the set win, 25-23.

The Rams cruised in set two, closing on a 10-2 run to pick up a 25-11 victory.

In the third, FSC held off a late Rhode Island rally to win the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.

Farmingdale State freshman outside hitter Cathleen Farrell (Bayport, N.Y.) tallied a match-high eight kills on a .462 hitting percentage. Freshman outside Madeline Stanley (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) notched four kills and four digs, while freshman Tara Calderon (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) recorded three kills, three service aces and seven digs. Junior libero Madisyn Pozo (Bayside, N.Y.) had 11 digs, junior outside Rachel McCartin (Wantagh, N.Y.) registered a match-high four service aces, to go along with two kills and seven digs, and sophomore setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) produced 27 assists, three aces, two kills and four digs. Sophomore middle Jenna Hayes (Kings Park, N.Y.) added three blocks for the Rams in the victory. 

The Rams are right back at it tomorrow, Saturday, September 11th as they play Worcester State at 11:00 a.m. and host-school Wheaton (Mass.) at 1:00 p.m.
