St. Joe's-LI Comes From Behind to Defeat Farmingdale State in Five Sets

St. Joseph's-Long Island - 3, Farmingdale State - 2 (20-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-12)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The FSC women's volleyball team hosted Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island this evening and fell, 3-2. Farmingdale State jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage, but the Golden Eagles stormed back by winning the next three sets to earn the five-set victory. With the loss, the Rams dropped to 13-13 on the season and 5-4 in the conference, while St. Joe's-LI improved to 11-11, 5-2.

After earning a 25-20 victory in the first set, FSC led by one, 23-22, in the second set and used back-to-back kills from senior middle blocker Kelsey Voiklis (Commack, N.Y.) to take the set, 25-22, and a 2-0 advantage.

The Rams started quickly in the third set scoring the first six points. With Farmingdale State leading 15-10 later in the set, St. Joseph's-Long Island went on a 6-1 run to tie it up at 16-16. With the set still tied at 24-24, the Golden Eagles were able to capture the final two points on kills from sophomore middle blocker Amanda Goldstein (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and freshman middle blocker Lauren Harmer (Lake Grove, N.Y.) to cut their deficit to 2-1.

With the fourth set knotted at 12-12, SJC-LI cruised to a 25-18 victory to force a deciding fifth game.

Farmingdale State led 5-0 in the fifth set before a 9-3 run allowed St. Joe's to take a 9-8 advantage. The Golden Eagles led 14-12 and clinched the set with a kill from junior middle blocker Jessica Young (Huntington Station, N.Y.) to earn the 3-2 Skyline Conference victory.

FSC sophomore outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) led the way with a career-high 19 kills to go along with nine digs and two blocks. Voiklis recorded 11 kills and a match-high six blocks, while freshman setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) tallied 40 assists, 12 digs, two kills and two aces. Sophomore libero Madisyn Pozo (Bayside, N.Y.) notched 20 digs and four aces, sophomore outside Rachel McCartin (Wantagh, N.Y.) produced eight kills and 18 digs, and sophomore defensive specialist Kellianne Dempsey (Lake Grove, N.Y.) added 13 digs in defeat.

The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team next will play Old Westbury (@ Farmingdale State) on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 p.m.
