Merchant Marine Earns 3-Set Win Over Farmingdale State

Merchant Marine - 3, Farmingdale State - 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team hosted Merchant Marine in a Skyline Conference match this evening and fell, 3-0. The Mariners improved to 12-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference after recording their 10th straight 3-0 shutout victory. 

In the second set, USMMA led 12-11 and recorded the next six points to extend the advantage to 18-11. FSC (10-8, 2-1) quickly answered with five straight points to close within two, 18-16. After back-to-back points put the Mariners ahead by four, the Rams followed with the next five as Kelsey Voiklis (Commack, N.Y.) and Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) each registered kills. Trailing 22-21, Merchant Marine tallied the final four points and earned the 25-22 second set victory.

Tied 11-11 midway through the third set, USMMA closed on a 14-5 run to cap off the 3-set sweep of Farmingdale State.

The Rams were led by junior outside Alicja Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y.) who had a team-high six kills, while sophomore outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) had five kills and a match-high four service aces. Cavalieri notched 17 assists and six digs in the loss.

For the Mariners, freshman outside Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a match-high 25 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore outside Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 12 kills and 11 digs. Senior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) finished the night with 40 assists and nine digs.

Farmingdale State next will travel to Mount Saint Mary for a conference match on Monday, October 7th at 7:00 p.m.
