FSC Falls in Home Match Versus Rutgers-Newark

Rutgers-Newark - 3, Farmingdale State - 0 (25-23, 28-26, 25-16)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to Rutgers-Newark, 3-0, this evening in Farmingdale, N.Y. FSC fell to 3-4 on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders improved to 5-3.

The Rams started quickly in the first set as they jumped out to a 6-0 advantage. Farmingdale State led 10-5 before Rutgers-Newark used a 6-1 run to knot the set at 11-11. Tied 23-23, the Scarlet Raiders used a pair of FSC attacking errors to win the set, 25-23. 

In the second set, the Rams led 22-13 but Rutgers-Newark would answer with seven straight points to close within just two at 22-20. Trailing 24-23, Scarlet Raiders' senior outside Comfort Akinbo (Woodbridge, N.J.) registered a kill from senior libero Brione Lockett (Elizabeth, N.J.) to tie it at 24-24. After trading points, Rutgers-Newark used a Farmingdale State attacking error and a kill from freshman outside Alexa Rivera (Luquillo, PR) to win the set, 28-26, and take a 2-0 advantage.

The Scarlet Raiders would capture the third set, 25-16, as they earned the non-conference victory, 3-0. 

Sophomore outside Rachel McCartin (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the Rams with a team-high eight kills and 18 digs, while senior middle blocker Kelsey Voiklis (Commack, N.Y.) registered seven kills and three blocks. Freshman setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) recorded 20 assists, nine digs and three kills and sophomore outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied five kills, nine digs, two blocks and two assists. Junior middle blocker Alicja Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y.) had four kills, five digs and a match-high three service aces in the loss.

Akinbo finished with a match-high 19 kills to go along with a .320 hitting percentage. Lockett produced a match-high 27 digs, while Rivera had eight kills, nine digs and three aces for Rutgers-Newark.

FSC next travels to Bard College for a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, September 14th. The Rams will play Bard at noon and follow with a match against Mitchell at 2:00 p.m.
