Rams Defeat Bryn Athyn & NJCU in First Matches of Season

Match 1: Farmingdale State - 3, Bryn Athyn - 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-20)

Match 2: Farmingdale State - 3, New Jersey City - 1 (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23)


Jersey City, N.J. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a non-conference tri-match this afternoon and earned a pair of victories. The Rams defeated Bryn Athyn, 3-0, and followed with a 3-1 win against New Jersey City.

In their first match against Bryn Athyn (0-2), FSC (2-0) won the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-18. In the third set, the Lions led 20-13 before FSC recorded the final 12 points of the match to clinch the 3-0 sweep.

The Rams were led by sophomore outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) who totaled a match-high 12 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore outside Rachel McCartin (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded nine kills, seven digs and a match-high five service aces, while junior setter Maria Veliz Thol (Queens, N.Y.) had 24 assists. Middle blockers Kelsey Voiklis (Commack, N.Y.) and Alicja Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y.) added eight and four kills, respectively, in the win.

In their second match of the day, FSC took a 2-0 lead before NJCU (2-1) claimed the third set, 25-23. After the Gothic Knights jumped out to an early 8-6 advantage in the fourth set, Farmingdale State answered with a 6-0 run to go in front by four, 12-8. The Rams would eventually take the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

Flamio tallied a team-high 17 kills, to go along with 12 digs, while McCartin registered 16 kills, 11 digs and two aces. Voiklis produced 12 kills, Zaborowska had six kills and four aces and freshman setter Lexi Cavalieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.) recorded 26 assists in the victory.

FSC next travels to Baruch College for a non-conference match on Thursday, September 5th at 6:00 p.m.
