FSC Outlasts Baruch in Five-Set Match

Farmingdale State - 3, Baruch - 2 (19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 16-14)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team hosted non-conference opponent Baruch College this evening and earned a 16-14 victory in the deciding fifth-set to secure a 3-2 win. FSC improved to 3-8, while the Bearcats fell to 4-6 overall.

The Rams fell in the first set, 25-19, but won the second, 25-20. Baruch took the third set, 25-18, and led 17-13 in the fourth, before a 12-3 run by Farmingdale State allowed the Rams to win the set and tie the match at 2-2. 

Tied at 10-10 in the fifth set, the Bearcats tallied four straight points to set up the match point. FSC would respond with five unanswered, capped off by a kill by junior middle blocker Kelsey Voiklis (Commack, N.Y.), to take a 15-14 advantage. After a Baruch timeout, another kill by Voiklis secured the Rams 16-14 five-set victory.

Voiklis finished with a team-high 13 kills, nine blocks and five service aces, while freshman setter Angie Yarrow (Absecon, N.J.) recorded 46 assists and 19 digs. Freshman outside Kate Flamio (East Islip, N.Y.) registered 14 digs and 11 kills and both freshman libero Kellianne Dempsey (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and sophomore right side Cereya Mazes (Copiague, N.Y.) produced 13 digs apiece. Senior outside Annie Cosgrave (Brightwaters, N.Y.) tallied 20 digs and nine kills in the victory.

For Baruch, junior outside Anita Sengara (Vancouver, BC) totaled 19 digs, 15 kills and three service aces, while freshman outside Ada Cao (Flushing, N.Y.) added 14 kills and 10 digs.

Farmingdale State next will host a tri-match featuring William Paterson and Keystone. The Rams will square off against William Paterson at 10:00 a.m. and Keystone at 2:00 p.m. The match between William Paterson and Keystone will begin at noon.
