Rams Fall in Close Match with Rutgers-Newark

Rutgers-Newark - 3, Farmingdale State - 1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-19, 28-26)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team lost a marathon game today, after a four-game match, falling 3-1 to visiting Rutgers-Newark (4-2). The Rams took the early 1-0 lead with a 25-20 victory, but fell in three straight sets to fall to 1-12 overall.

In the third set, Farmingdale State was behind 16-3 before cutting the deficit to 16-9 with a six-point streak and then another eight-point run made the score 23-19 and forced a timeout by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers scored the next two points to take the third set 25-19.

The fourth set, the Rams were ahead 13-8 after the first rotation, but Rutgers cut the lead to 22-18 after the second rotation. Farmingdale State led 24-20 and a four-point streak tied the game at 24-24 and after two more ties, Newark would take the eventual win 28-26.

Farmingdale State was led by junior outside Sarah Palladino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) with nine kills, 14 digs, two aces and one block assist. Freshman middle blocker Maia Cadle-Hinton (Huntington, N.Y.) tallied nine kills, one ace, one block solo and one block assist. Sophomore libero Francesca Calderon (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) led the team with 18 digs, while sophomore setter Megan Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished with 29 assists.

For Rutgers-Newark, Freshman right side Chrissy Campanelli (Linden, N.J.) paced Rutgers-Newark with 17 points, including 11 kills, six aces and 11 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Sharee Gordon (Newark, N.J.) added 10 kills, while senior libero Paulina Walega (Harrison, N.J.) came up with a team-high 18 digs. Freshman setter Emilie Pulecio (Nutley, N.J.) ran the offense with 36 assists while adding three aces and eight digs.

The Rams will open up Skyline Conference play tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 18th, at home against Maritime College at 7:00 p.m.
