Volleyball Splits in Season Opener at Old Westbury Invitational

Game One: St. Joe's Brooklyn - 3, Farmingdale State - 1 (26-24, 20-25, 15-25, 20-25)

Game Two: Farmingdale State - 3, Brooklyn College - 1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-8)


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's volleyball team opened their season today in the Old Westbury Panther Invitational and split two games, falling to St. Joe's Brooklyn 3-1 and defeating Brooklyn College 3-1.

In the game against St. Joe's Brooklyn, the Rams won the first set 26-24, but fell in the next three 20-25, 15-25 and 20-25. Senior right side Cathryn McLean (Freeport, N.Y./Northport) led the team with 12 kills and 10 digs, while freshman setter Shelby Martin (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) had 23 assists. Senior libero Theresa Rokee (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) finished with 19 digs.

Against Brooklyn, Farmingdale State went up 1-0 with a 25-21 victory in the first set and Brooklyn came back to tie the score at 1-1 with a 25-22 win. The Rams took the next two sets 25-22 and 25-8. McLean led in kills with 13, while Martin had 10 assists and Rokee had 14 digs.

Farmingdale State will face Centenary and Old Westbury tomorrow, Sunday, September 7th, in the second day of the Invitational. The game against Centenary is scheduled for noon and Old Westbury is at 2:00 p.m.
