Six Student-Athletes at Farmingdale Receive Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards

The State University of New York’s Chancellor, Robert L. King, recently named six of Farmingdale State’s student-athletes as winners of the 2004-05 Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards. The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. One student-athlete was chosen in each sport from one of four SUNY colleges, including Farmingdale State, Old Westbury, Purchase and Maritime. In addition to academic excellence, the student-athlete must have been named to any of the following: the All-Conference Team, All Tournament Team, MVP, etc., in order to be nominated for this award. This year’s winners from Farmingdale State were Reggie Routier (Indoor Track), Melissa Rudy (Volleyball), Patric Santiago (Golf), Anthony Scali (Baseball), Alberto Soberanes (Cross Country) and Devan Weber (Softball). The Chancellor will be honoring these recipients at The 2005 Scholar-Athlete Awards on Monday, April 25th at the Wyndham Hotel in East Syracuse, New York.
Freshman and team captain Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY/Dix Hills) currently holds a 3.12 GPA and has made an immediate impact on the Rams Volleyball team this year. She was named Second Team All-Skyline for her play as an outside hitter. Melissa finished the season averaging 2.34 kills, 0.65 service aces and 3.43 digs over 68 games in regular-season play. She was also named to the WIAC First-Team and picked up All-Tournament honors at the WIAC Tournament on October 30th. Melissa is also the Vice President of Farmingdale’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Women's Volleyball End of Season Report

The Women’s Volleyball team and first year head coach John Sack finished the 2004 season 11-11 overall and 4-4 in the Skyline Conference. The Rams were defeated in the quarterfinals of the Skyline Tournament by St. Joseph’s College. Sophomore Gina Moscato and freshman Melissa Rudy were standouts for the Rams this season. Gina finished with 218 kills, 49 service aces, 284 digs and 16 blocks as a starting outside hitter. Melissa totaled 164 kills, 45 service aces, 241 digs and 23 blocks. Gina and Melissa were both named First Team All-WIAC, Melissa also picked up Skyline Second-Team honors. The Rams lost starting setter Falon Taddeo at mid-season. Falon, a junior, suffered a broken wrist and missed the remainder of the season. Falon still led the team in attack percentage (.244), assists (4.33 per game) and averaged 1.48 kills per game.
The team will be returning 9 of 10 players, losing senior Amanda Amodio, who has been solid as a defensive specialist throughout her career. Amanda finished the year with 26 kills, 26 service aces and 168 digs. The team will look toward freshman Elena Albert to take over defensively. Elena averaged 3.48 digs per game with a total of 226 digs. Sophomore Emily Fallon led the team in blocks this year with 28, along with an impressive 37 service aces. Freshman Megan Cranmer showed flair as a setter, stepping up her game in the final stretch. She tallied 278 assists and finished third on the team in service aces.

Melissa Rudy Named Second Team All-Skyline

The 2004 All-Skyline Women's Volleyball Team was announced on November 11th. Freshman Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY/HHH East) was selected Second Team All-Skyline. Melissa finished the season averaging 2.34 kills, 0.65 service aces, 3.43 digs over 68 games in regular-season play. In Skyline play (28 games), Melissa led the Rams with an average of 2.85 kills, 0.15 assists, 0.65 service aces and 3.73 digs.

WIAC Volleyball All-Stars Announced

Two members of the Farmingdale State volleyball team have been named WIAC All-Stars. Sophomore Gina Moscato (Hicksville, NY) and freshman Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) were selected to the WIAC All-Star First Team. The Rams finished 3-3 in the WIAC with 20 games played. Gina finished the season with 70 kills (3.5 per game), 8 service aces, 73 digs (3.65 per game) and 7 blocks. Melissa finished with 42 kills, (2.10 per game), a .143 hitting percentage, 14 service aces, 71 digs and 9 blocks. Gina and Melissa also picked up All-Tournament honors at the October 30th WIAC Tournament.

St. Joe’s Defeats Farmingdale in Skyline Quarterfinal’s

The #5 seed Rams (11-11) fell to #4 seed St. Joseph's College (15-7) 3-0 in the Skyline Conference Quarterfinal’s on Wednesday night. Farmingdale came out storming in the first game for an early lead, but could not hold on as the Golden Eagles stole the momentum and went on for the three game sweep. St. Joseph’s advances to the semifinal game of the Skyline Tournament and will face #1 seed Stevens Institute on Saturday at 10am at Stevens Institute of Technology. King’s Point defeated Centenary in other quarterfinal action and will travel to Stevens to face #2 seed Mount Saint Mary College at noon on Saturday. The winners of these two matches will compete in the finals at 3pm for the Skyline Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

This weekend marked the WIAC Volleyball Tournament, which took place at New Jersey City University in Jersey City, NJ. The Rams (11-10) were seeded fourth for the tournament and defeated St. Elizabeth’s in the quarterfinal match 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 31-29). Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) led the team against St. Elizabeth’s and finished with 12 digs, 2 aces, 7 kills and 2 blocks. Unfortunately, Farmingdale fell in the semifinals to Stevens Institute 3-0 (30-19, 30-6, 30-17) as errors proved costly throughout the match. Sophomore Gina Moscato (Hicksville, NY) and freshman Melissa Rudy were named to the WIAC All-Tournament Team.
The Rams have clinched a spot in the Skyline Playoffs and will travel to St. Joseph’s College on Wednesday, November 3rd for a 7pm game.

Melissa Rudy Named Farmingdale Athlete of the Week

Mount Saint Mary defeated Farmingdale State (9-8, 4-4 Skyline) 3-0 in tonight’s Skyline Conference Women’s Volleyball game. The Blue Knights improved their record to 8-8 overall, 5-2 Skyline. Farmingdale dropped to 9-8, 4-4 Skyline.
Senior Libero Amanda Amodio (Bay Shore, NY) played in her final home night game for the Rams, finishing with 5 digs and 1 kill. Freshman Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) tallied 10 kills and 2 blocks. Gina Moscato (Hicksville, NY) totaled 10 kills and 2 aces.

Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) and Gina Moscato (Hicksville, NY) both totaled 9 digs and 2 blocks in the loss. Falon Taddeo (Oceanside, NY) finished with 17 assists.

The Rams improved to 8-5, 3-2 in the Skyline with a win over conference opponent Mount Saint Vincent. Senior Amanda Amodio (Bay Shore, NY) finished with 8 kills and 13 digs for Farmingdale. Junior setter Falon Taddeo (Oceanside, NY) was back in action from an injury, totaling 12 assists and 20 digs.
Freshman Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) had a well-balanced game serving up four aces, 24 digs and 7 kills. The Rams will look to continue their winning ways on the road against conference opponent Old Westbury on Thursday, October 7th at 7:00pm.

Rams Victorious Over Staten Island

Farmingdale State defeated Staten Island tonight with scores of 30-15, 30-8, 30-14. The Rams improved to 7-5 overall, while the Dolphins fell to 2-7. Freshman middle hitter Sherice Spencer (Hempstead, NY/St. Dominic) played well for the Rams with 6 kills, 2 aces and 1 assist. Freshman setter Megan Cranmer (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) totaled 23 assists and 4 aces.
Farmingdale has a week off and will play next Tuesday, October 5th at the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7pm.

WIAC Play Date Results

In Saturdays WIAC Play Date, host Farmingdale State went 1-1 with a loss to St. Joe’s and a win over St. Elizabeth’s. The Rams record now stands at 6-4, 2-1 Skyline, 3-1 WIAC. Farmingdale freshman Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) tallied 9 kills, 2 solo blocks and 14 digs in the loss against St. Joseph’s. Gina Moscato (Hicksville, NY) finished with 22 kills and 2 solo blocks in game two against St. Elizabeth’s.
St. Joseph’s improved to 5-6, 3-1 Skyline, 2-2 WIAC as they were undefeated today in matches with Farmingdale and Rutgers-Camden. Standouts in the Farmingdale game were Melissa Willi (Jamesport, NY), Christine Bennett (Bellmore, NY) and Sara Connelly (Shirley, NY). Against Rutgers-Camden, St. Joe’s was led by Bennett, Kelly O’Shaughnessy (Jackson Heights, NY) and Andrea Chibbaro (Brookhaven, NY). The College of Saint Elizabeth ended the day with a win over Rutgers-Camden and a loss to Farmingdale State.
Rutgers-Camden dropped to 0-9, 0-4 WIAC today although proving themselves in games against St. Joe’s and St. Elizabeth’s. Leaders for Rutgers were Kristina Matthews (Sewell, NJ) and Tasheena Peel (Bronx, NY).

The Rams fell to 5-4, 2-1 Skyline tonight as they were defeated by conference rival King’s Point (7-3, 3-0 Skyline).
Janine Wachter (Smithtown, NY) led the Mariners to victory with 18 kills, 10 digs and 3 solo blocks. Holly Cummings (Alexandria, IN) tallied 14 kills and 10 digs. Kit Jablonski (Portland, OR) dished out 20 assists. Farmingdale’s Falon Taddeo (Oceanside, NY) finished with 20 assists, 8 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Melissa Rudy (Dix Hills, NY) led the Rams with 15 kills and added 10 digs. Gina Moscato (Hicksville, NY) totaled 10 kills and 18 digs.
Farmingdale will host a WIAC Play Date this Saturday, September 25th, with games at 10am and Noon.

Gina Moscato Named Athlete of the Week

Sophomore outside hitter Gina Moscato was named Skyline and WIAC Player of the Week for Volleyball. She averaged 3.62 kills, 4.62 digs and 1.00 blocks per game in four matches for Farmingdale State last week. Moscato, who had three double-doubles (kills and digs) had 19 kills, 25 digs and five service aces in leading the Rams to a 3-1 win over Mount Saint Mary in a non-league match at the New Paltz Invitational.

Freshman setter Megan Cranmer (Hicksville, NY) dished out 8 assists and served up 6 aces.
The Rams will take on Skyline opponent King’s Point at home on Wednesday, September 22nd at 7pm. In the last meeting, Farmingdale faced King’s Point in the Skyline Semi-Finals where they fell 3-2 in an exciting marathon five-game match.

Farmingdale State (1-0) defeated John Jay (0-1) 3-0 in the season opener. The Rams took the first two games easily 30-19 and 30-15. John Jay struck back in game three and took a commanding 10-point lead 22-12, but Farmingdale fought back to take a 30-28 victory.

John Sack Named Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Farmingdale State

Mike Harrington, Director of Athletics at Farmingdale State, announces today that John Sack has been named head women's volleyball coach at Farmingdale State. Sack was the girl's junior varsity volleyball coach at Copiague High School the past four years. Before that, Sack held numerous coaching positions including St. John the Baptist High School and Oyster Bay High School. He was also a player/coach at his alma mater Southern Connecticut State University where he received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Master's Degree in School Health Education. Sack, a former high school and college track star, currently teaches physical education in the Copiague School District. Sack replaces Irma Munoz who will be the assistant coach at Eastern Connecticut State University.
