#2 Merchant Marine Defeats Third-Seeded Rams in Semifinals

KINGS POINT, N.Y. | The third-seeded Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team was defeated, 14-5, by #2 Merchant Marine in the Skyline Conference Semifinals on Thursday evening. The Rams have been eliminated from the playoffs, while the Mariners advanced to the Skyline Final and will travel to top-seeded Maritime on Saturday.

FSC (8-10) senior midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) won the opening draw of the game and quickly scored the game's first goal to give Farmingdale State a 1-0 edge.

With 11:59 on the clock, USMMA (13-2) tied the score with a Lauren Jablonowski goal before recording four unanswered goals in the next four minutes to take a 5-1 advantage.

Merchant Marine's Jenna Turrentine added a goal with two seconds left in the first quarter as they took a 6-1 lead into the second. 

Over the first 6:05 of the second quarter, the Mariners tallied five unanswered goals to take a commanding 11-1 lead. 

The Rams trailed 13-1 in the third and used a free-position goal by junior attack Nicole Pontecorvo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), but were unable to score the rest of the quarter.

Farmingdale State junior midfielder Megan Diamond (Dix Hills, N.Y.) scored with 5:31 to play before senior attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) netted back-to-back goals in the final two minutes as Merchant Marine went on for the 14-5 victory.

Vogiatzis produced a team-high two goals, while Diamond had a goal, an assist, one caused turnover and two draw control. Codispoti recorded a goal, two draw control and three ground balls and Pontecorvo registered a goal and one ground ball.

FSC senior defender Adrianna Schiavone (Seaford, N.Y.) produced two caused turnovers and three ground balls and junior attack Anna Hughes (Bethpage, N.Y.) collected two caused turnovers and one ground ball.

Sophomore defender Lucienne Horrocks (Rutland, VT) tallied one CT and one ground ball and senior defender Emily Zeblisky (Northport, N.Y.) picked up a game-high five ground balls. Senior attack Marina Zumbrunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) recorded one draw control and one ground ball, while sophomore defender Kristin Stabiner (Queens, N.Y.) added two ground balls. Freshman midfielder Molly Espey (West Hempstead, N.Y.) finished with one draw control and one ground ball.

In goal, senior Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) made five saves.

For the Mariners, Jablonowski led the way with five goals, two assists and seven draw control.
