Defense Guides Rams to Victory Over Mount Saint Mary

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Mount Saint Mary College, 11-6, on Wednesday afternoon. The FSC defense led the way totaling 16 caused turnovers and 25 ground balls. 10 different players recorded at least one caused turnover for the Rams.

Mount Saint Mary won the game's opening draw and used a free-position goal by Victoria Ward to go ahead, 1-0.

The Rams evened the score with 11:08 on the clock as junior midfielder Megan Diamond (Dix Hills, N.Y.) set up senior attack Marina Zumbrunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) for the score.

FSC took the lead with 5:58 to play in the first quarter as Diamond scored a free-position goal.

Farmingdale State sophomore midfielder Molly Espey (West Hempstead, N.Y.) scored unassisted early in the second quarter, while Ward scored late in the quarter for MSMC as the Rams took a one-goal lead, 3-2, into the halftime break.

FSC still led by one, 4-3, and used a free-position goal from junior attack Anna Hughes (Bethpage, N.Y.) to go up 5-3. The Knights quickly won the ensuing draw control and scored to make it a one-goal game again at 5-4.

With 1:47 to play in the third quarter, Hughes scored her second of the game, from Diamond, as Farmingdale State took a 6-4 advantage into the fourth.

Just 3:12 into the fourth, Espey scored her third to give FSC a three-goal lead, 7-4.

Farmingdale State was ahead 8-5 and scored a coast-to-coast goal by senior midfielder Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) to go up by four.

Espey and senior attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored in the final two minutes to account for the 11-6 final.

Espey recorded a season-high four goals to go along with a caused turnover and four ground balls, while Hughes had a season-best three goals. Diamond tallied a goal, two assists and three draw control and Codispoti registered a goal, two caused turnovers and four ground balls. 

On defense, sophomore Kristin Stabiner (Queens, N.Y.) totaled three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while senior Adrianna Schiavone (Seaford, N.Y.) tallied three CT's and three GB's.

Senior Celina Schenk (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) produced two caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Sophomores Lucienne Horrocks (Rutland, VT) and Kelly Gardner (Bethpage, N.Y.) and senior Emily Zeblisky (Northport, N.Y.) had one caused turnover apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) made 13 saves on 19 shots to earn the win in net.

The Rams next will play Old Westbury in a Skyline game on Saturday, April 15th at noon. The game will be at Farmingdale State with FSC as the away team.
