Women's Lacrosse Falls Short at Maritime

Maritime - 9, Farmingdale State - 7


THROGGS NECK, N.Y. | The FSC women's lacrosse team traveled to Throggs Neck, N.Y. to play Skyline Conference opponent Maritime on Friday night and fell, 9-7. 

The Rams (3-7, 1-2 Skyline) started quickly as they scored three goals in the first five minutes. Senior goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) made a save on the first shot of the game before junior midfielder Megan Diamond (Dix Hills, N.Y.) cleared the ball and scored unassisted. After a yellow card on the Privateers (8-2, 3-0 Skyline) gave the Rams possession, Diamond set up senior attack Marina Zumbrunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) for a goal only 27 seconds later. Farmingdale State's third goal came with 10:05 remaining in the first quarter when Diamond registered her second unassisted goal of the game.

Maritime registered a pair of goals at the end of the opening quarter to cut their deficit to 3-2.

Privateers sophomore midfielder Morgan Tracy recorded the first two goals in the second quarter to take a one-goal lead.

With 5:44 on the clock, Diamond scored for the third time to knot the game at 4-4. After a draw control win by MT, Tracy tallied a free-position goal as Maritime entered the halftime break with a 5-4 advantage.

After trading scores over the first 10 minutes of the third quarter, the Privateers produced a free-position goal and went into the fourth with an 8-6 lead.

Reilly stopped five shots in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to keep it a two-goal game before Rams' junior attack Nicole Pontecorvo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) netted a goal, from Diamond, with 5:04 remaining to close within one at 8-7.

The Privateers won the ensuing draw control and after running down the shot clock, scored to go back up by two, 9-7, with just 3:40 on the clock.

Farmingdale State attempted two more shots in the final minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net as they fell, 9-7.

Diamond tallied a game-high six points on four goals and two assists, to go along with four ground balls and six draw control. Zumbrunn, Pontecorvo and senior attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.) finished with one goal apiece. 

Reilly matched her career-high with 16 saves in defeat.

FSC will next play host to Skyline Conference opponent Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday, April 12th at 4:00 p.m.
