Pontecorvo Nets OT Game-Winner as Rams Defeat Ramapo

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | Farmingdale State junior attack Nicole Pontecorvo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) netted the game-winning goal, off the pass from junior midfielder Megan Diamond (Dix Hills, N.Y.), to clinch an overtime victory, 12-11, over visiting Ramapo on Wednesday evening. The FSC women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season and is now 1-1 overall, while the Roadrunners dropped to 1-2.

Just 1:23 into the game, Roadrunners freshman attack Erin Smeilus recorded the first goal of the game to quickly take a 1-0 advantage. Diamond won the ensuing draw control and quickly passed the ball to Pontecorvo, who scored to tie the game.

Ramapo closed the quarter with three unanswered goals, including two by sophomore Lauren Travaglini and one from Smeilus, to go ahead 4-1.

The Rams opened the second quarter with a goal by senior attack Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.), off the feed from freshman midfielder Kailee Coppola (Levittown, N.Y.), to cut their deficit to two.

Pontecorvo followed with two straight goals to knot the score at 4-4.

After trading goals, the Roadrunners Colleen Mason scored with just 26 seconds on the clock to give Ramapo a 7-6 advantage at the halftime break.

Farmingdale State opened the second half with a draw control win by sophomore midfielder Molly Espey (West Hempstead, N.Y.). Just 33 seconds later, Diamond set up Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) for the tying goal.

The game was tied at 8-8 until 5:50 to play in the third quarter, when Roadrunners sophomore midfielder Kelly Griffin registered an unassisted goal.

FSC still trailed 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter but used a goal by Vogiatzis, off the pass from Codispoti, to once again tie the score with 12:48 remaining.

Ramapo responded with back-to-back goals in just 1:22 to go in front, 11-9.

With 4:48 on the clock, Codispoti registered a free-position goal to close within one at 11-10. Only 2:42 later, Diamond assisted on another Vogiatzis goal to knot the score at 11-11.

In the final two minutes, Rams' senior goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) made a pair of saves as the game headed into overtime.

Just over a minute into OT, the Rams drew a foul and a yellow card on Ramapo. Diamond held the ball on the restart and ran up the field, passing the ball to Pontecorvo for the game-winning, woman-up goal as the Rams earned the 12-11 victory.

Pontecorvo registered four goals and one assist on the day, while Diamond had a goal, five assists, five draw control, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Vogiatzis recorded a hat trick and Codispoti produced two goals, one assist, two caused turnovers and two draw control. Coppola tallied a pair of assists, Espey had a goal, one caused turnover and four draw control, and senior attack Marina Zumbrunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) added a goal and one caused turnover in the win.

Senior Celina Schenk (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) controlled the defense with a game-high five caused turnovers, to go along with four ground balls. Reilly matched her career-high with 15 saves as she picked up the win in goal.

The women's lacrosse team next heads on the road to play #3 ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday, March 11th at noon.
