Women's Lacrosse Edged Out by Montclair State in Triple Overtime

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team opened their 2023 season on Saturday afternoon against Montclair State and fell, 11-10, in triple overtime.

The Rams (0-1) trailed 6-2 after the first quarter but used goals from seniors Athena Vogiatzis (Holtsville, N.Y.), Marina Zumbrunn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Ashley Codispoti (Patchogue, N.Y.) to pull within one at 6-5.

After FSC opened the third quarter with a free-position goal by junior midfielder Megan Diamond (Dix Hills, N.Y.), the Red Hawks (1-2) registered back-to-back goals only 11 seconds apart to regain a two-goal lead, 8-6.

Farmingdale State was still down by two, 10-8, with 7:32 left to play before Diamond scored two goals in 1:08 to knot the score at 10-10.

In the final minute, the Rams scored what they thought was the tie-breaking goal, but it was waved off as the game headed into overtime.

Farmingdale State had a free-position shot saved early in the in the first overtime period before senior goalkeeper Ronnie Reilly (Oceanside, N.Y.) made a stop at the other end.

In the second OT, Montclair State controlled play as Reilly made five consecutive saves to keep the game tied at 10-10.

Finally, in the third overtime, the Red Hawks forced a turnover to gain possession of the ball and freshman midfielder Norah Monaghan drove to net and scored to clinch the 11-10 3OT victory.

Diamond recorded three goals, one assist, four ground balls and nine draw control for the Rams, while Vogiatzis finished with three goals. Codispoti tallied a goal, one assist, three caused turnovers and five draw control and Zumbrunn added a goal and an assist for two points. Junior attack Nicole Pontecorvo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Molly Espey (West Hempstead, N.Y.) produced one goal each.

On defense, senior Celina Schenk (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) had a career-high five caused turnovers. Senior defender Emily Zeblisky (Northport, N.Y.) registered two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Reilly finished with 12 saves in the loss.

FSC will next play host to non-conference opponent Ramapo on Wednesday, March 8th at 4:00 p.m.
