Farmingdale State Defeats Mount Saint Vincent on Senior Night

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team recorded a 19-5 win over Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference game this evening in Farmingdale, N.Y. It was senior night at FSC and Haley Newberg (West Islip, N.Y.), Jessica Spina (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), Sabrina Ferreri (Mineola, N.Y.) and Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.) were each honored as they were playing in their final regular season home game.

The Rams (6-10, 5-1 Skyline) started quickly as junior midfielder Sam Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) and sophomore attack Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back goals in the first minute of play.

With 19 minutes left in the first half, the Rams extended their advantage to 4-0 with a pair of goals from midfielders Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Skylar Steinberg (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) only 13 seconds apart. Less than a minute later, Iannotta recorded her second goal of the game to put FSC on top, 5-0.

Over the next 11 minutes, the Dolphins (7-6, 3-4 Skyline) used a 3-1 run to cut their deficit to to three.

The Rams would close the half with goals from freshman defender Hayley Kirby (West Islip, N.Y.), Shelton and Gendels to take a 9-3 advantage into the halftime break.

After each team scored two goals apiece in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Sparrow netted the pass from Shelton to put FSC in front by seven, 12-5. Just over a minute later, Shelton scored off the feed from Gendels to take an eight-goal advantage.

With 17:51 remaining, Shelton scored on a free-position attempt before Steinberg scored from Spina to take a commanding 15-5 lead.

Over the final 15:53, the Rams outscored the Dolphins 4-0 as freshman attack Nia Merritt (Lynbrook, N.Y.), Gendels, sophomore midfielder Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) and Spina each scored to give the Rams the 19-5 victory.

Gendels (5g, 1a) and Shelton (4g, 2a) each tallied a game-high six points for Farmingdale State, while Spina had four points on one goal and three assists. Kirby produced one goal, two assists, three ground balls and a game-high six draw control and Steinberg notched a career-high three goals. Sparrow added one goal, one assist and two caused turnovers, while sophomore midfielder Haley Perez (Smithtown, N.Y.) picked up a game-high five ground balls and Newberg set a new career-high with four caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls.

FSC goalkeepers Emily Rodier (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Iyana Hudson (Brentwood, N.Y.) split time in net and recorded five and four saves, respectively.

Farmingdale State next will close out the regular season with a Skyline Conference game at Old Westbury on Saturday, April 27th at noon.
