Women's Lacrosse Falls to Western New England

Western New England - 19, Farmingdale State - 13


Englewood, Fla. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team was defeated by non-conference opponent Western New England, 19-13, this morning in the first game of their spring break trip. FSC dropped to 0-6, while the Golden Bears improved to 2-3.

Over the first five minutes, the Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from junior midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.). Western New England would respond with four straight goals over the next 13:23 to go in front, 4-2.

After Farmingdale State's Deanna Iannotta (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) registered an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to one, Golden Bears' freshman midfielder Liz Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals to extend the advantage to 6-3.

FSC trailed 7-5 at the break and opened the second half with an unassisted score from Iannotta and a free-position goal by Gendels to knot the game at 7-7 with 27:09 remaining.

Western New England held a 9-8 lead with 20 minutes left and recorded six unanswered goals in a four minute span to take a commanding 15-8 advantage.

The Golden Bears led by as many as 10 down the stretch as they would earn the 19-13 non-conference victory.

Gendels led the way for Farmingdale State as she recorded a season-high seven points on six goals and one assist. Senior attack Jessica Spina (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had two goals, one assist and three ground balls, while Iannotta tallied two goals and two ground balls. Rams' senior defender Haley Newberg (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Danielle Hall (Levittown, N.Y.) each produced three caused turnovers in the loss.

For Western New England, senior attack Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) and junior attack Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) registered four goals apiece, while sophomore attack Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) had two goals and a game-high five assists.

The Rams have one more game on their spring trip as they play the Calvin College Knights tomorrow, Wednesday, March 20th at Lemon Bay High School in Englewood, Florida at 8:00 p.m.
