Farmingdale, N.Y. - Senior attack Janisha Sanchez (Brentwood, N.Y.) broke the school record today for assists in a season, finishing with six assists, in Farmingdale State's 18-2 women's lacrosse victory over Old Westbury. The Rams improved to 14-1 overall, 7-0 in the Skyline, while the Panthers dropped to 5-9, 4-3 in the conference.
Sanchez assisted the first two goals of the game, feeding freshman midfielder Victoria Varone (Commack, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Brittany Rosino (North Babylon, N.Y.) to give FSC the 2-0 lead over the first four minutes.
Farmingdale freshman midfielder Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.) added two more before the 20-minute mark for a 4-0 advantage, before freshman attack Rachel Phillips (Riverhead, N.Y.) got the Panthers on the board with an unassisted goal with 13:19 left to play in the first half.
Sanchez assisted on a Megan Sullivan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) score a minute later, her third assist of the day, before posting her fourth assist with 1:25 remaining in the half on a Varone score, to close out the half with the Rams ahead 9-1.
Old Westbury's sophomore midfielder Natasha Treuman (Merrick, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal to make it 9-2.
Varone and Sanchez connected again four minutes later, as Farmingdale State pulled ahead 10-2, tying the school record, her 57th assist of the season.
With 20:22 left to play in the half and the Rams ahead 12-2, Sanchez again set up Varone in front, posting her 58th assist of the season for a new school record and giving the Rams a 13-2 lead.
The Rams added five more goals throughout, en route to the 18-2 conference victory.
Sanchez's 58 assists, surpassed the former record of 57 in a season, set in 2012 by Krystin Shand.
For Farmingdale State, Varone finished with a career-best five goals and one assist for a game-high six points, while Gendels and Sparrows notched three goals apiece. Rosino won a game-high nine draw controls.
Old Westbury junior goalkeeper Ashley Gugliuzzo (Oakdale, N.Y.) finished with 14 saves in defeat. Phillips finished with one goal, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Farmingdale State will now host Mount Saint Mary for Senior Day in their final regular-season home game on Saturday, April 29th at 1:00 p.m.
