Rams Defeat Manhattanville in Season Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season with a 19-5 home non-conference victory over Manhattanville this evening.

The Rams (1-0) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as freshmen midfielders Victoria Varone (Commack, N.Y.) and Courtney Gendels (Wantagh, N.Y.) each tallied a goal within the first 29 seconds.

Leading 3-1, an unassisted score by sophomore midfielder Alexandra Sparrow (Levittown, N.Y.) extended the FSC advantage to three. After senior midfielder Brittany Rosino (North Babylon, N.Y.) put the Rams on top by four with 19:04 left in the first half, Varone followed with back-to-back goals to increase the lead to 7-1.

Farmingdale State led 12-2 and over the final 7:17 of the half, Varone, Gendels and Sparrow each recorded goals to give the Rams a 15-2 advantage at the break.

In the second half, FSC outscored Manhattanville (0-1) 4-3 to earn the 19-5 season opening win.

Varone, in her collegiate debut, scored a game-high four goals, had two assists and six draw controls. Senior attack Janisha Sanchez (Brentwood, N.Y.) recorded six points on a goal and a game-high five assists, while Sparrow and senior attack Megan Sullivan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each scored three times. Gendels finished the night with three goals and one assist for Farmingdale State.

The Valiants had five different players score a goal in the loss.

The Rams next will host Scranton in a non-conference game on Saturday, March 11th at 1:00 p.m.
