Newark, N.J. - The Farmingdale State men's soccer team fell, 5-1, in their season opener last night at non-conference opponent Rutgers-Newark (1-0).

The Rams fell behind 1-0, seven minutes into the contest as Ronald Quiroz (Fairview, N.J./Cliffside Park) scored a header off the pass from Kofi Agyemang (Union, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep.) for the Raiders. Innocent Buule (West New York, N.J./Memorial) scored an unassisted goal for Rutgers-Newark in the 17th minute, opening up a 2-0 advantage. Farmingdale State senior midfielder Alex Mendolia (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) cut the deficit in half 22 seconds later, as he was setup by sophomore midfielder Brian Anderson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Buule added his second goal of the game later in the half as the Raiders took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

Rutgers-Newark netted two second half goals and held Farmingdale State scoreless, earning the 5-1 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Ricky Meschkow (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage) had six saves for Farmingdale State, while sophomore goalie Jonathan Frances (Chandler, Ari./Hamilton) had one save in the win for Rutgers-Newark.

The Rams will play Green Mountain College in the Lasell College Kick Off Classic on Saturday, September 4th at 2:30 p.m.
