FSC Rolls Past Sage in Home Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team hosted Sage in the wind and rain this afternoon for their home opener and earned a 20-3 non-conference victory. FSC improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Gators dropped to 0-2.

FSC opened the scoring just 1:37 in as sophomore midfielder Johnny McMahon (Albertson, N.Y.) netted the pass from senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.). Less than two minutes later, an unassisted goal by freshman attack Rob Varello (Smithtown, N.Y.) put the Rams ahead 2-0. After a goal by Haggerty, McMahon and freshman midfielder Hunter Lyons (East Islip, N.Y.) each recorded scores to put Farmingdale State up 5-0 with 7:29 left in the first quarter.

Leading 6-2 early in the second, Lyons notched his second goal of the afternoon off the pass by McMahon to increase the advantage to five. The Rams scored the next five goals to take a 12-2 lead with 5:50 remaining. After a man-up score by Sage's Bailey Martin (Syracuse, N.Y.), Varello closed the half with an unassisted goal as FSC went into the break in front, 13-3.

With 8:30 left in the third, Varello scored his third goal of the day off Gino Luchetti's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) pass to increase the advantage to 11. Haggerty notched the final two goals of the quarter - which were both assisted by McMahon - to put the Rams on top, 16-3.

In the fourth quarter, Lyons, freshman midfielder Tyler Cardinali (Seaford, N.Y.) (two goals) and freshman midfielder John Carnevale (East Meadow, N.Y.) each scored to cap off the 20-3 home victory.

McMahon finished with a game-high nine points on three goals and six assists to go along with four ground balls, while Haggerty had a game-high four goals and two assists. Lyons, Varello and sophomore attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) each recorded three goals and freshman midfielder Antonio Kaminskey (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) picked up a game-high six ground balls in the win.

Three different players scored a goal for Sage in the loss. 

The Rams next will travel to the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples, Florida and play Division II University of Tampa on Saturday, February 26th at 2:00 p.m.
