New London, Conn. - Freshman attack Rob Varello (Smithtown, N.Y.) tied the single-game school record with nine goals in today's 26-2 non-conference victory at Mitchell College. The FSC men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a win, while the Mariners fell to 0-1.

Farmingdale State freshman midfielder Michael Cassano (Plainview, N.Y.) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal only 43 seconds into the game.

After a Varello goal put the Rams ahead 2-0, senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) followed with a score to give the Rams a three-goal advantage with 9:46 remaining. Over the next 3:23, Haggerty scored twice and freshman attack Joe Colao (Middle Island, N.Y.) recorded a goal to increase the lead to 6-0. Varello notched the final two goals of the quarter to give the Rams an 8-0 advantage after one.

Leading 11-1 with 12:01 left in the second, sophomore midfielder Johnny McMahon (Albertson, N.Y.) netted the pass by Haggerty for the Rams. FSC outscored Mitchell 9-0 the remainder of the quarter as Varello led the way with four goals during that stretch.

After a scoreless third, Varello opened the fourth with his school record tying ninth goal of the game as he connected on the Steven DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) pass. The Rams added the next four goals before Mitchell scored with 33 seconds remaining. FSC went on for the 26-2 season opening victory.

Varello finished the day with 10 points on nine goals and one assist. His nine goals ties Matthew Finn (vs. Maritime - 2013) and Ryan Wieczorek (vs. Kean - 2017) at the top of the FSC record book. Varello's 10 points is tied for second all-time with three other players at Farmingdale State. Haggerty tallied eight points on four goals and four assists, while freshman midfielder Antonio Kaminskey (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored one goal and picked up a career-high 15 grounds balls. Kaminskey is tied for third all-time at FSC with 15 ground balls in a single game.

The Rams next will play host to Sage in a non-conference game on Tuesday, February 22nd at 4:00 p.m.
