Rams Earn Spot in Conference Final with Win Over USMMA

#2 Farmingdale State - 18, #3 Merchant Marine - 6


Farmingdale, N.Y. - The second seeded Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team defeated #3 Merchant Marine, 18-6, in the semifinals of the Skyline Conference Championship this evening in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 7-1 on the season and earned their spot in the Conference Final for the first time since 2011.

FSC senior midfielder John McMahon (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored unassisted only 36 seconds in to give the Rams a 1-0 edge.

Over the next seven minutes, Farmingdale State tallied four straight goals to take a 5-0 advantage. Senior attack Terrence Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) scored twice before junior midfielder Matt Sullivan (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Hunter Lyons (East Islip, N.Y.) notched unassisted goals.

The Mariners (4-3) got on the board with 6:39 left to play in the first quarter as freshman attack Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.Y.) set up junior attack Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.).

Only 34 seconds later, J McMahon tallied a man-up score to regain the five-goal lead, 6-1.

FSC led 7-1 and used goals from senior midfielder Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), Lyons and freshman attack Thomas Stock (Selden, N.Y.) in the first 5:41 of the second quarter to take a commanding 10-1 advantage.

Just a minute later, Stock set up Lyons for his third goal of the game to give the Rams a 10-goal lead.

Over the final five minutes of the half, Merchant Marine scored three goals to cut their deficit to 11-4 at the break.

After each team scored two goals apiece in the third quarter, Haggerty notched a man-up goal from sophomore attack Jake Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) to open the fourth quarter and give Farmingdale State a 14-6 lead.

With 10:15 left to play, J McMahon set up Stock for a goal before scoring one of his own to go in front, 16-6.

The Rams added two goals down the stretch as they went on for the 18-6 victory. FSC held the Mariners scoreless over the final 16:08 of the game.

Stock recorded a game and career-high six points on four goals and two assists, while Lyons had a career-high four goals and five ground balls. J McMahon recorded three goals, one assist and eight ground balls, to go along with 11 faceoff wins and freshman midfielder Antonio Kaminskey (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) won 10 faceoffs and had eight ground balls. Haggerty (3g), C McMahon (2g, 1a) and Sullivan (1g, 2a) finished with three points apiece.

FSC goaltender Will DeCamp (Bay Shore, N.Y.) stopped 10-of-12 shots in the victory.

Farmingdale State will now travel to #1 Maritime (7-0) for the Championship game on Saturday, May 8th at 1:00 p.m.
