John is a 2016 graduate of West Babylon High School, where he was named All-Division his senior year. John transferred to Farmingdale State after playing lacrosse at Mercy College. He is the son of Lillian and Terence McMahon.

Junior year...Named First Team All-Conference and All-ECAC First Team...Played in 16-of-17 games, with 15 starts...Led FSC in faceoff wins (118), faceoff win percentage (.570) and ground balls (88), ranked second in caused turnovers (18) and also recorded 12 points on eight goals and four assists...Set the school record for ground balls against Hartwick with 19...In the Skyline, ranked second for ground balls per game (5.50), third in faceoff win percentage and ground balls and fifth for faceoffs won...Finished 77th in the Nation for faceoff win percentage.
