Coll Scores Game-High Five Goals as Mariners Defeat Rams

Kings Point, N.Y. - Merchant Marine senior attack Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored a game-high five goals, including the final two of the game, as the Mariners earned a 15-11 Skyline Conference men's lacrosse victory over Farmingdale State this afternoon in Kings Point, N.Y. Merchant Marine improved to a perfect 9-0 on the year and 4-0 in the conference, while the Rams fell to 6-5, 1-2.

Trailing 6-4 with 4:46 remaining in the second quarter, FSC used a Connor Dalton (Hicksville, N.Y.) goal off the pass by Conor McAvoy (East Setauket, N.Y.) to cut the deficit in half. Only one minute later, Merchant Marine responded with a score from junior attack Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) after being set up by Coll to bring the advantage back to two at 7-5. Over the final 3:18 of the half, junior attack Shane Clark (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored for the Rams and senior attack Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) followed with a man-up goal for the Mariners as Merchant Marine went into halftime ahead, 8-6.

Senior attack Nick Treon (Danville, Penn.), Renard and Coll started the third quarter with goals for USMMA which extended the advantage to 11-6 with 12:54 on the clock. Only seven seconds later, McAvoy netted the pass from senior defender Nick Capone (West Islip, N.Y.) to pull the Rams within four. Farmingdale State closed the quarter with a goal by sophomore attack AJ Sandorfi (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and a pair from junior midfielder James Ragland (Seaford, N.Y.) to head into the fourth down by only one, 11-10.

With 9:36 left to play, Merchant Marine sophomore midfielder Mike Morsberger's (Catonsville, Md.) only goal of the game brought the Mariners lead back to two. Just over a minute later, McAvoy tallied his third score of the day to bring the Merchant Marine advantage back to one at 12-11. An unassisted goal from Treon with 4:18 remaining put USMMA back in front by two before back-to-back man-up goals from Coll sealed the 15-11 victory for the Mariners.

McAvoy finished with a team-high four points on three goals and one assist, while Sandorfi and Ragland each added two goals and an assist. Capone and sophomore midfielder John McMahon (West Babylon, N.Y.) each picked up six ground balls for the Rams.

Treon totaled a game-high six points (four goals and two assists) and Renard finished with three goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) picked up a game-high 12 ground balls in the victory.

FSC junior goalkeeper Dan Wood (East Meadow, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots, which tied his season-high, while freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) had nine saves for Merchant Marine.

The Rams next will host SUNY Delhi in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 10th at 4:00 p.m.
