Farmingdale State - 17, Alfred State - 2
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State junior midfielder Conor McAvoy (East Setauket, N.Y.) (5g) and sophomore attack AJ Sandorfi (Lynbrook, N.Y.) (1g, 4a) each tallied five points for the Rams in a 17-2 non-conference win over Alfred State this afternoon. The FSC men's lacrosse team improved to an even 3-3 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 1-3.
The Rams opened up a quick 4-0 advantage only 5:11 into the game as junior midfielder James Ragland (Seaford, N.Y.) scored three times and McAvoy once. With 3:56 left in the first quarter, Alfred State cut the deficit to 4-1 on a goal by junior attack Joe Johnson (North Chili, N.Y.). Farmingdale State would answer with an unassisted goal from Sandorfi to go in front 5-1 heading into the second.
FSC outscored the Pioneers 2-0 in the second quarter as McAvoy scored both goals off the feed from Sandorfi.
Only 1:11 into the third, Rams junior attack Shane Clark (Oceanside, N.Y.) set up McAvoy for another goal to increase the advantage to 8-1. With 3:22 left in the quarter, Clark assisted on a Connor Dalton (Hicksville, N.Y.) goal before McAvoy registered his fifth goal of the game only 13 seconds later. The final goal of the third was a man-up score by Clark from Sandorfi to put Farmingdale State ahead 11-1.
FSC held a 6-1 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter en route to the 17-2 non-conference victory. The Rams held a 55-10 shot advantage, was 22-of-25 on clear attempts and caused 23 turnovers, a mark that ranks second all-time in school history.
McAvoy led the way with a game-high five goals, while Sandorfi produced four assists. Clark finished the day with four points, on two goals and two assists, and a game-high eight ground balls, while Ragland scored three times. Dalton (2g), sophomore attack Joe Roach (Hicksville, N.Y.) (2g) and junior midfielder Kevin Kasprzak (Huntington, N.Y.) (2a) tallied two points each. Senior defender Nick Capone (West Islip, N.Y.) caused six turnovers and picked up five ground balls in the win.
Pioneers sophomore goalkeeper Matt Cobb (Churchville, N.Y.) made 13 saves in defeat.
Farmingdale State will now open their conference schedule with a road game at St. Joseph's-Long Island on Friday, March 16th at 5:30 p.m.
