Vassar College - 12, Farmingdale State - 8
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team hosted Vassar College this evening in a non-conference game and were defeated, 12-8. This is the first loss for the Rams since March 5th as FSC now holds a 9-2 record on the season.
The Brewers (7-4) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Farmingdale State sophomore attack Michael Cegielski (Somers, N.Y.) tallied the final goal of the first quarter to cut the deficit to three.
Vassar opened the second quarter with a man-up goal from freshman midfielder James Thomas (Manhasset, N.Y.) at the 14:39 mark. With 11:16 remaining, the Rams used an unassisted score by junior attack Tyler Rifice* (Bohemia, N.Y.) to again close within three.
Trailing 6-2 with 1:53 remaining in the second, FSC junior midfielder Mike Curry (Melville, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal but Vassar's Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, Conn.) recorded the final score of the half as the Brewers took a 7-3 lead into the break.
After Vassar extended the advantage to 8-3, a man-down goal from junior midfielder Stephen White (Copiague, N.Y.) off Cegielski's pass pulled the Rams within four. With 3:39 left to play in the third, junior midfielder Patrick Cowcer (East Northport, N.Y.) scored on a behind the back shot after being set up by James Reiser (Melville, N.Y.) to cut the Farmingdale State deficit to 8-5.
Each team scored a goal to open the fourth quarter before the Brewers used back-to-back goals to take a 11-6 lead with 8:12 remaining. The Rams outscored Vassar 2-1 the remainder of the way but fell, 12-8.
Offensively, Farmingdale State was led by Cegielski who had two goals and an assist and Rifice's two goals to go along with six ground balls. Curry finished with a goal and an assist, while senior midfielder Ryan Corbett* (Plainview, N.Y.) picked up a game-high seven ground balls. Senior defender Matthew Brendel* (Hicksville, N.Y.) tied a career-high after causing five turnovers.
Moriarty recorded a game-high six points on two goals and four assists, while senior attack Noah Parson (Cary, N.Y.) had two goals and a pair of assists for Vassar.
The Rams next will host St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game on Friday, April 15th at 6:00 p.m.
