Rams Edge MSMC in Skyline Opener

Farmingdale State - 10, Mount Saint Mary - 9


Newburgh, N.Y. - In the first Skyline Conference game of the season, the Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team edged Mount Saint Mary, 10-9, on Friday night. With the win, the Rams improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Skyline action.

Leading 3-1 in the second quarter, a Derrick Sherrod (Huntington, N.Y.) goal off the pass from Stephen White (Copiague, N.Y.) put Farmingdale State ahead by three with 13:03 remaining. After an unassisted score by junior attack Tyler Rifice* (Bohemia, N.Y.) increased the lead to 5-1, sophomore attack Michael Cegielski (Somers, N.Y.) followed with a goal only nine seconds later for FSC.

The Rams held a 7-1 advantage before Mount Saint Mary (8-2, 0-1) closed the half with man-up goals by sophomore midfielder's Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.).

After back-to-back third quarter goals by Rifice gave the Rams a 9-4 lead, the Knights responded with four unanswered scores to close within one, 9-8.

With 8:24 left to play in the fourth, MSMC junior attack Joseph Rizzotti (East Meadow, N.Y.) recorded a man-up goal off the feed from De Meo to even the score at 9-9.

Only 2:21 later, Cegielski tallied the game-winning goal as James Reiser (Melville, N.Y.) picked up the assist to lead the Rams to the 10-9 Skyline Conference victory.

Rifice finished with a game-high four goals, added one assist and four ground balls, while Cegielski totaled five points on three goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Ryan Corbett* (Plainview, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Nick Capone (West Islip, N.Y.) each picked up a game-high six ground balls in the win.

The Knights were led by De Meo's six points on three goals and three assists.

Senior goalkeeper Thomas Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) stopped 12 shots for FSC, while sophomore Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) had 19 saves in the loss.

Farmingdale State next will travel to Western Connecticut State for a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m.
