Cegielski's Game-Winner Powers FSC Past Eastern Connecticut

Farmingdale State - 8, Eastern Connecticut - 7


Mansfield, Conn. - Tied 7-7 with 2:57 remaining, Farmingdale State sophomore attack Michael Cegielski (Somers, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal to lead the men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday.

Trailing 1-0 early in the first, a man-up goal from FSC (4-1) junior attack Tyler Rifice* (Bohemia, N.Y.) evened the score at 1-1. With 13 seconds remaining in the quarter, a Derrick Sherrod (Huntington, N.Y.) unassisted goal put the Rams ahead, 2-1.

After Farmingdale State took a 3-1 advantage, Eastern Connecticut's (1-4) Tim Reilly (Hanover, Mass.) tallied back-to-back goals to tie the game at 3-3. Cegielski added the final score of the first half as the Rams went into halftime leading 4-3.

With 12:40 left to play in the third quarter, junior midfielder Mike Curry (Melville, N.Y.) gave the Rams a two goal edge with an unassisted score. Cegielski followed with two consecutive goals to extend the Rams lead to 7-3.

The Warriors closed to within one, 7-6, and tied the game on a man-up goal from sophomore attack David Borovsky (Burlington, Conn.) with 3:27 left on the clock. Only 30 seconds later, Cegielski recorded the game-winning goal leading Farmingdale State to the 8-7 non-conference victory.

Cegielski finished with a game-high five points on four goals and one assist, while Rifice had a pair of goals and four ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Thomas Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) had 14 saves in the victory.

Eastern Connecticut was led by senior attack Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, Mass.) who had two goals and two assists.

The Rams next will travel to FDU-Florham for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 22nd at 4:00 p.m.
