Rams Earn Non-Conference Win Over Hartwick

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team improved to 3-1 on the season after this afternoon's 9-6 non-conference victory over Hartwick College.

Leading 2-1 with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter, the Rams took a two-goal lead on a score from junior midfielder Mike Curry (Melville, N.Y.) off Derrick Sherrod's (Huntington, N.Y.) pass. After Hartwick (1-2) cut the deficit to 3-2, a man-up goal by freshman attack Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, N.Y.) to close the quarter tied the game at 3-3.

Only 2:46 into the second, Hartwick took the lead on Ferguson's second goal of the day. FSC junior attack Tyler Rifice* (Bohemia, N.Y.) recorded an unassisted goal with 3:24 left in the half to even the score at 4-4. The Hawks added a late score and took a 5-4 lead into the break. 

After Sherrod's unassisted goal tied the game at 5-5, sophomore midfielder Daniel Desimone (Plainview, N.Y.) connected off the feed from Curry to put Farmingdale State back ahead, 6-5. The Rams used back-to-back goals from Sherrod and junior midfielder Javon Garrett (Amityville, N.Y.) to extend their advantage to 8-5 with 4:15 left to play in the third quarter.

FSC led 8-6 entering the fourth and Sherrod scored the only goal of the quarter as the Rams earned the 9-6 win.

Curry finished with a game-high five points on one goal and four assists, while Sherrod had a game-high three goals to go along with one assist. Sophomore attack Michael Cegielski (Somers, N.Y.) scored twice and Rifice added a goal and an assist. Senior defender Matthew Brendel (Hicksville, N.Y.) caused a game-high three turnovers, while senior defender Kyle Carrick* (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Nick Capone (West Islip, N.Y.) each picked up four ground balls.

Hartwick was led by Ferguson who scored two goals and had one assist and sophomore midfielder David Bianculli's (Charlton, Mass) game-high nine ground balls.

Farmingdale State senior goalkeeper Thomas Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) recorded a season-high 11 saves, while senior Mike Rourke (Long Beach, N.Y.) stopped 15 shots for the Hawks.

The Rams next will travel to Eastern Connecticut for a non-conference game on Saturday, March 19th at 1:00 p.m.
