Fast Start Leads Montclair State Past FSC

Montclair, N.J. - Montclair State outscored Farmingdale State 6-0 in the first period en route to a 13-4 Skyline Conference men's lacrosse victory last night in Montclair, N.J. The Rams fell to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Red Hawks improved to 8-5, 3-0.

Leading 6-0 with 7:35 remaining in the second, Montclair State junior attack Brett Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) scored two goals in 37 seconds to increase their lead to 8-0. After an unassisted score by Zach Schreck (Flemington, N.J.) put the Red Hawks ahead 9-0, the Rams closed the first half with goals by Tyler Rifice (Bohemia, N.Y.), Michael Cegielski (Somers, N.Y.) and Derrick Sherrod (Huntington, N.Y.) to go into the break trailing 9-3.

Junior midfielder Connor Cunningham (Jackson, N.J.) tallied an unassisted goal with 14:17 left in the third period to increase the Red Hawks lead to seven. Only eight seconds later, Cegielski netted the pass from senior midfielder Donovan Devaney (East Northport, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 10-4. Montclair State scored the final three goals of the game as they earned the 13-4 Skyline Conference victory.

Cegielski recorded a team-high three points on two goals and one assist, while junior defender Kyle Carrick* (Bay Shore, N.Y.) picked up a team-leading five ground balls for Farmingdale State.

The Red Hawks were led by Schreck who had a game-high four goals.

The Rams next will host Mount Saint Mary in a conference game on Saturday, April 18th at 1:00 p.m.
