Farmingdale State - 11, Misericordia - 10 (OT)
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team scored four goals in the fourth period and a sudden victory goal by freshman midfielder Daniel Desimone (Plainview, N.Y.) in overtime to defeat Misericordia (3-3) today, 11-10. The Rams improved to 4-2 with the non-conference win.
Misericordia took control the first period and held a 5-1 lead, before adding three more in the second period to take the 8-4 advantage into the halftime break.
In the third period, each team scored two and Farmingdale State trailed 10-6 going into the fourth. Freshman midfielder Ryan McArdle (East Northport, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the period to make it 10-7, followed by a man-up goal by freshman attack Tyler Rifice (Bohemia, N.Y.) off a pass from Desimone. Rifice scored again with 5:52 remaining in regulation and the Rams trailed by just one.
After a Misericordia save with 30 seconds on the clock, Rifice pressured the goalie and was able to cause a turnover which was picked up by junior attack Philip Schaefer (Holbrook, N.Y.) just behind the net. Schaefer rounded the net and saw an open Desimone in front, who sent home the game-tying goal with 20 seconds left to play.
The Rams won the faceoff and a final shot with seven seconds to go was saved by Misericordia to force the overtime period.
In overtime, Farmingdale State junior midfielder Donovan Devaney (East Northport, N.Y.) won his 13th faceoff of the game (13-20), with a ground ball pickup by senior midfielder Vincent Aniano (Oceanside, N.Y.) and the Rams called a timeout. A Farmingdale shot went wide and an ensuing slashing penalty gave the Rams a man-up opportunity at the 2:57 mark.
Desimone accepted a pass and made a few quick moves around a Misericorida defender and sent his game-winning shot past the goalie with 2:21 on the clock.
Rifice led with five goals, four ground balls and two caused turnovers for Farmingdale State, while Desimone finished with two goals, one assist. Schaefer scored two and had two assists. Devaney led with a game-high 10 ground balls, while freshman defender Steven Marxhausen (Levittown, N.Y.) caused a team-high four turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
For Misericordia, sophomore midfielder Andrew Reynolds (Pine Brook, N.J.) scored a team-high four goals and one assist with seven ground balls. Sophomore attack Lane Kocovski (Andower, Minn.) scored three goals and junior goalkeeper Patrick Johnson (Montville, N.J.) made 23 saves in defeat.
The Rams will now travel to face Wesleyan on Tuesday, March 25th for a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m.
