Connecticut College - 16, Farmingdale State - 8
Philadelphia, Pa. - Trailing 6-4 at the half, the Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team allowed nine goals in the third period and would fall 16-8 to Connecticut College in a neutral site game at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams now stand at 2-5 overall, while the Camels improve to 1-3.
After two goals from Connecticut's John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.), the Rams struck back with two goals from senior attack Ryan Oswald (Floral Park, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Jason Opitz (West Hempstead, N.Y.) to tie the game at 2-2 after the first period.
In the second, freshman attack Brad Rapone (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal for Farmingdale State as they took the lead 3-2 with 7-minutes to play before halftime. The Camels outscored the Rams 4-1 the rest of the second period, holding the two-goal lead at the break.
In the third, Connecticut notched two more goals for an 8-4 advantage, while Farmingdale's Oswald scored on a pass from senior midfielder Rob Nosworthy (Massapequa, N.Y.) to make it 8-5, but the Camels ran away with the game on seven unanswered goals to close out the period and would take the non-conference win.
Lyons finished with a game-high five goals for Connecticut. Chad Sawyer (Northfield, Ill.) had a big day with three goals and an assist. JR Hartgers (Franklin Heights, N.J.) dished out a game-high four assists and one goal. Senior Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) registered a 76% winning percentage on face-offs (19-for-25) to go with a game-high 13 ground balls.
Farmingdale senior midfielder Jason Opitz, Ryan Oswald and junior midfielder Bobby Thomas (Wantagh, N.Y.) all finished with two goals. Nosworthy distributed three assists, while senior midfielder Shannon Robinson (Freeport, N.Y.) contributed two for the day. Junior defenseman Ricky Morales (Holbrook, N.Y.) corralled six ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Delventhal (Westbury, N.Y.) made 13 saves in 54:44 of action in the cage.
The Rams will travel next for a Skyline Conference game at Montclair State on Saturday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m.
