Rams Outlast Montclair State; Defeat Defending Skyline Champions

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team defeated two-time defending Skyline Conference Champion Montclair State, 9-6, this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 5-4 overall, 2-0 in the conference, while the Red Hawks fell to 3-6, 0-1 in Skyline play.

Farmingdale State trailed 2-1 late in the first period before junior midfielder Jimmy Owsinski (Kings Park, N.Y.) evened the score with a man-up goal off the feed from Bobby Thomas (Wantagh, N.Y.).

Junior attack Matthew Prongay (Edison, N.J.) scored only 11 seconds into the second period, putting the Red Hawks back ahead 3-2. Senior attack Wes Hubschmitt (Seaford, N.Y.) and Thomas responded with back-to-back goals, giving the Rams a 4-3 advantage with 7:18 remaining in the period. After Montclair State tied the game at 4-4, Owsinski scored off Hubschmitt's pass, giving Farmingdale State a 5-4 halftime advantage.

Junior midfielder Tim Caden (Setauket, N.Y.) recorded an unassisted goal 3:04 into the third, before Montclair State's Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, N.J.) cut the deficit back to one, as Douglass Kennedy (Rumson, N.J.) picked up the assist.

Leading 6-5 with 12:15 to play, Oswald scored his second goal of the game for Farmingdale State. Caden increased the Rams lead to 8-5 with an unassisted score 1:30 later. The Red Hawks would close within 8-6 but Oswald sealed the victory for Farmingdale scoring the games final goal at the 4:54 mark.

Oswald led all scorers with three goals, while Caden had two goals, two assists and four ground balls. Owsinski added two goals and an assist and Hubschmitt had one goal and two assists. Freshman midfielder Al Rocco (Elmont, N.Y.) was an impressive 13-for-19 on face-offs. Junior midfielder Shannon Robinson (Freeport, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Vincent Aniano (Oceanside, N.Y.) each picked up a game-high five ground balls, while sophomore defender Ricky Morales (Holtsville, N.Y.) caused four turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Brian Nerney (Massapequa, N.Y.) had 10 saves in the victory.  

The Red Hawks were led by Prongay and senior midfielder Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, N.J.) who each scored two goals. Senior defender Dustin Malaszuk (Clifton, N.J.) picked up five ground balls.

Farmingdale State next will host Kean in a Skyline Conference game on Wednesday, April 13th at 4:00 p.m.
