Defense Leads Rams Past Vassar

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse team allowed only five goals to Vassar College in a low scoring non-conference matchup in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Rams defeated the Brewers 7-5 and improved to 3-4 on the season.

Farmingdale State struck first with an unassisted goal by junior attack Ryan Oswald (Floral Park, N.Y.) six minutes into the game. Vassar took a 2-1 lead as they closed the first period with goals from Christopher Toffoli (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Max Herman (Flemington, N.J.).

Junior attack Erick Thomson (Floral Park, N.Y.) evened the score at 2-2 with an unassisted goal three minutes into the second period. Junior midfielder Jimmy Owsinski (Kings Park, N.Y.) gave the Rams the lead with 1:12 remaining before halftime with a man-up goal off the feed from senior attack Wes Hubschmitt (Seaford, N.Y.). Farmingdale State held the Brewers scoreless in the second period after allowing only four shots, one of which was on goal.

Hubschmitt extended Farmingdale's lead to 5-2, after scoring back-to-back goals in a span of 1:02 midway through the third. Vassar would close within 5-4 after goals by Herman and Jack Gross.

With 8:58 remaining on the clock, Hubschmitt netted his third second half goal, increasing the Rams lead to 6-4. Gross again closed the deficit to one with his second score of the game at the 6:14 mark. Junior midfielder Shannon Robinson (Freeport, N.Y.) answered for Farmingdale State recording an unassisted goal 36 seconds later. Neither team would score over the final 5:38 as the Rams held on for the win.

Hubschmitt led all scorers with three goals and one assist. Oswald, Thomson, Owsinski and Robinson each had one goal for the Rams. Junior goalkeeper Patrick Delventhal (Westbury, N.Y.) made 11 saves.

Vassar's Herman and Gross each had two goals in the loss.

Farmingdale State next will host Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline game on Saturday, April 2nd at 3:00 p.m.
