Rams Season Ends in Skyline Semifinals
#1 Montclair State - 13, #4 Farmingdale State - 5
Montclair, N.J. – After grabbing the #4 seed for the Skyline Tournament, the Rams season ended with a 13-5 loss to top-seeded Montclair State on Wednesday evening. The Red Hawks led at the half, 10-4 and would hold Farmingdale to one goal over the final two periods, en route to the 13-5 victory.
Freshman attack Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) scored
five times while sophomore Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, N.J. /
West Essex) added a pair of scores and three assists. Senior John
Schiavone (Montclair, N.J. / Montclair) scored twice and won
10-of-16 faceoffs as the Red Hawks moved to 12-4 on the year and
advance to the championship game. MSU, winners of six straight,
will host third-seeded Kean University in the title contest on
Saturday, May 2nd at Sprague Field, beginning at 1:00 pm, with the
winner earning the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division
III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Joe Stroessenreuther (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) scored twice for
Farmingdale (6-10), which ended its season at 6-10. The Rams, who
fell to MSU for the second time this season, also had their
three-game winning streak snapped.
Farmingdale jumped on top 1:06 into the contest as Jimmy Owsinski
(Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) fed Stroessenreuther for his 24th
goal of the season. Montclair State would answer just over a minute
later as Schiavone scored unassisted triggering a three-goal run by
the Red Hawks. Meth scored the latter two goals eight seconds apart
as Montclair went up 3-1 with 5:28 left in the opening period.
Stroessenreuther registered hits second goal with 4:47 to play,
but Meth scored on the man-advantage and Sinicola followed with an
unassisted marker as Montclair led 5-3 at the end of one period.
The Red Hawks would put the first five goals on the board in the
second period. Mike Corsetto (Kinnelon, N.J. / Kinnelon) scored a
man-up goal 29 seconds in and defenseman Patrick Ferry (Clifton,
N.J. / Clifton) ran the length of the field for his third of the
year as MSU increased its lead to 7-3. Meth and Schiavone scored 39
seconds part midway through the period before Taylor Bonner (Old
Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) capped off the run with his 32nd with 4:53
remaining as Montclair would lead 10-4 at the break.
Erick Thomson (Floral Park, NY / Floral Park) cut the MSU lead to
10-5 early in the third quarter, but Meth finished off his night
with his fifth of the game with 2:59 left as Montclair led 11-5
after three periods. Greg Fitzgerald (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen
Ridge) and Sinicola closed out MSU’s scoring in the fourth
for the final margin.
MSU goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, N.J. / Pope John XXIII)
made four saves for MSU, which outshot the Rams, 39-16 in the game.
Senior Teddy Leone (East Meadow, N.Y.. / East Meadow) had 12 saves
for Famringdale.
Schiavone also added five ground balls while Bowers led Montclair
with six ground balls. Collin Marsh (Asbury, NJ. / North Hunterdon)
had four caused turnovers. Joe Nacarlo (West Babylon, N.Y. / West
Babylon) posted four ground balls and eight faceoff wins for
Farmingdale State.
