Meola Leaves Farmingdale as All-Time Leading Scorer
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Senior attackman Joe Meola
(Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) leaves Farmingdale State as the
All-Time leading scorer in men's lacrosse, after accumulating 186
points during his career with the Rams. Joe led the team in scoring
in two of his four seasons, and is the career assists leader with a
total of 88 assists over 63 games played.
His career began at Farmingdale in 2004, as the Rams went 8-6 and made an appearance in the ECAC Metro Tournament. Meola finished his rookie campaign with 37 points (28 goals, 9 assists), good for second highest on the team, under then head coach Steve D'Argenio.
In his sophomore season, Meola scored a career-high and team-leading 61 points, helping his team to a 9-7 record and another appearance in the ECAC Tourney. During the year, he was ranked as high as 19th in the Nation for assists per game, finishing the season with 2.07 assists per game.
During his junior year, in a home game against Lasell College, Joe
suffered a season-ending knee injury. Fortunately, Meola qualified
for a medical redshirt with the NCAA and did not lose a year of
eligibility.
Back for another junior year with the Rams, Joe was named a team
Captain in 2007 and once again finished atop the team in scoring
(2nd) with 47 points. He also ended the season ranked 82nd in all
of Division III for assists per game (1.4).
In his final year, under new head coach Tim Tuttle, Meola was looked upon for his leadership to help his team adjust to a brand new style of play. In 2008, Meola posted a team-high 32 points, surpassing former teammate Ryan LaFlare (‘04-‘07), to make him the All-Time leading scorer with 98 goals and 88 assists. LaFlare, a 2007 graduate and Academic All-American, held the former record of 162 points.
While not only being a great leader on the field for his five year tenure at Farmingdale State, Meola graduated with a 3.59 grade point average in the Management Technology major, with a minor in Sports Management. Meola was actively involved with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, being elected as the President his final two years. He received the Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award during his junior year, and worked in the Athletic Department during his senior year as a Sports Information Intern.
